Decent crime novel
Moves along at a nice pace leaving no time for you to get bored. Good storyline and mostly interesting characters. Some aspects, for example two of the main characters having a troubled background, and a touch of professional jealousy from one of Morgan's colleagues seem a little contrived. Otherwise an enjoyable read.

Loved This
Occasionally a book ticks every box, dots every i, crosses every t and is a wonderful surprise right from the start. For me this is one of those books. I wanted to know what happened but didn't want it to end, it was a pleasure to read and I enjoyed the whole experience enormously.Morgan Brookes is a very new police officer, in fact she is out driving around the local area alone for the very first time when she gets a call to attend a possible suicide. Something doesn't seem quite right however, and talking it over with her boss DS Ben Matthews finds he agrees with her. As he's short staff, without any possibility of it changing anytime soon, he has her seconded to CID.As the case becomes more convoluted and the hours she works get longer and longer Morgan realises just how much she loves being a detective and doesn't want her time with the new team to end. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to her, or any of her colleagues, Morgan is now in the sights of someone very dangerous and it may not be just her time in CID which comes to an abrupt end.Having read a few books by Helen Phifer I knew I always enjoyed her work but this time she's aced it. From the first page I loved everything about Morgan and the team led by Ben and Amy. The case was an interesting take on a common theme, of a family killed by person or persons unknown, but with a major twist. I worked some things out but others surprised me and I really hope it won't be too long before there is a second book in what could easily become a favourite series of mine and, I'm sure, many others.I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good murder or is looking for a new series to get their teeth into. With this book Helen Phifer has definitely risen to a new level, and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Couldn't put it down, lived it!
I liked the characters and how the author introduced their pasts a bit at a time throughout the book. The plot was face paced but was also developed in a way that kept you enthralled and wanting more. I just finished book one and can't wait to read the next book about Morgan Brookes.

4.25⭐ A wonderful introduction to rookie cop Morgan Brookes
One Left Alive wonderfully introduces readers to rookie cop Morgan Brookes who on her first day of solo patrol is called to a house where a woman is found hanging in her front garden, and the sight has a profound effect on the young PC. Who is determined to find the family of the deceased, so they can be notified. But when the absence of the family continues, Morgan realises something is seriously wrong and is determined to find out what. Which leads to a much more shocking discovery and her chance at a three-month attachment to CID and as Morgan and her new team digs for clues Morgan discovers an old unsolved murder case linked to the house. And this is when the story got much more enthralling, and with plenty of procedural detail, great characters and the Lake District as the setting this was a really enjoyable story. That I genuinely found hard to put down and would happily recommend to others.

Murders galore and the introduction to Detective Constable Morgan Brooke’s. Wow.
One Left Alive by Helen Phifer.Rating 4.5/5.What is great about this novel are the characters, the plots, the relationships and importantly an introduction to Helen Phifer. There is a murderer out there and they need to be stopped. A good build up interspersed with so every interesting characters. The banter between them is funny and gives depth in the relationships.A really good read and lots more to look forward to.Many thanks to Helen Phifer, her team, Bookatoure and NetGalley forgiving me the opportunity to read One Left Alive. In return I have written an honest and unbiased review.

Inconsistencies and poorly researched but the series has potential
The idea was good but the inconsistencies and lack of understanding of police processes were quite annoying at times. Had to go back and re read some bits to confirm I was not mis remembering! Had a quite few ‘wait, what? That makes no sense’ moments which detracted from what could have been a very reasonable story. Some examples - unless my several attempts at reading these bits still didn’t make it clear to me…. Morgan updated the case board from the car park at one point And drives an ambulance whilst holding the victims hand all the way there - bloody long arms that girl has! Also the actions across the police service were devoid of any reality. No one gets promoted to DC on their first day - even acting! And she wasn’t even that good - she was reckless and bloody naive. Who lets a wanted teenager into their house, feeds him, lends him clothes and feeds him vodka without calling their colleagues?! If she had died and the detectives had all been suspended by Professonal Standards for allowing her to endanger herself and putting her in a job she was so clearly not ready for I would have thought that more likely than how it played out. Proof reading and research … let’s hope the next 4 books in the series benefit more from these happening! Once I accepted the flaws, I kind of enjoyed reading it. I read several books a week so I will try the next one hoping for improvement into what could be a successful series of books with lessons learned.

Amazing
Wow, great read and started out good and ended great. Morgan is a rookie officer but gets to work as a detective along with Ben, her boss, and Amy, a partner. They have to find a killer and evidence. It takes lots of twist and turns and you can't stop reading.Would recommend to anyone who likes a good read and a crime story.

Unterhaltsam
