Can anyone get the timer to work?

I think it was just for night and day. Wish I could tell you more, but I can tell you this, I love these little lights and I used the remote inside my house and had the lights outside. They are so pretty and remind me of Tinkerbell. CE

Is it possible to have two strands with different modes - one twinkle, one sold - and not be affected with one remote?

I don't use the remote. I doubt that it's possible - each strand operates separately. To get 2 different modes, you'd need both remotes (included with each strand). It's easy enough to just use the switch on the battery boxes. Set each box to your desired setting and they'll turn on and off on their own.
