Stanford: Violin Concertos
C**D
Needs to be at number 1
Tired of the violin concerto diet you get when visiting concert halls all over the world? Then take a little patience and listen to this beautiful violin concerto by a Brahms and Joachim admirer: mr. Stanford's.Very much praised in his lifetime (countless pupils learnt the composer job from him) he was nearly forgotten until Chandos saved him when they recorded his interesting symphonies and some concertos.Hyperion fills the gap with this very British violin concerto (yes, you won't be disappointed, it sounds a little like Brahms without the way he handled orchestral development) and they already did a great job with the piano concerto (coupled with Parry's, again a very forgotten composer rescued by Hyperion and Chandos).May I ask for some good recordings of the Songs of the Sea and the Songs of the Fleet? Thank you Hyperion and interpreters for this very fine disc.
