Keeps my little urban mutt warm and dry in the wet Pacific NW
I have a smallish (22 lb) dog who hates being wet and/or cold. Since we live in the Pacific NW, there's a lot of rain and it's cold in the winter. He has very short fur with no undercoat. Even though he's active, he's also small and it's hard for him to keep warm. He likes to poke under every bush along our walks, no matter how wet. We walk about 5 miles/day, mostly on pavement but sometimes on trails. He's not a dog park kind of guy and he's always on a leash. The Hurtta Summit Parka was expensive, but it's been worth every penny. My dog's measurements: 14" back, 20" chest, 15" neck. I bought the size 14, and it fits him perfectly. Both the top and base of the neck can be tightened, and there's a ton of room in the chest buckle to adjust either bigger or smaller. For those of you with dogs that have "unique" builds, as mine does, I suggest ordering based on the back length. Be sure to watch the video so you see how to measure. It's from the withers to the tail, not from the base of the neck. If between sizes, order up. The back length can be shortened. Pros: - It's very well made and very sturdy. - Even in pouring rain, my dog stays warm and dry under the coat. - The back access slit for the harness clip is in exactly the right place. It has a flap over it which keeps the harness dry. - It's incredibly adjustable. Cons: - The back buckle was on upside down. It was annoying, but easily fixed by simply removing it, turning it over, and threading the strap back through. - I find the buckle hard to squeeze enough to get it to release. To be fair, I have arthritis in my hands that makes it difficult to pinch hard. I'm hoping it loosens up a bit. Others might not have this problem. It's certainly not a deal breaker because everything else about the coat is great. - My dog hates the elastic for his rear legs. The coat stays put well enough without, so I just don't use them.

Great jacket, size 22
I've a bought a couple Hurtta jackets and this one, like the rest, is very high quality. It took me a couple of tries to get the right size - thank you Amazon for allowing returns! - but this one fits exactly the way I wanted it to. She's a solid 45lb dog with a 28" chest and 20 1/2" back. I started with size 20, but it just didn't give the coverage that I wanted for our frigid Maine climate. It fit ok, but I wanted it to come down on her legs a bit more. She has a fairly long back compared to her short legs so this is perfect. We do have the Hurrta Extreme coat that I love in a size 20, and that's great when it gets brutal here. So thinking that the sizes would be the same, I went with the 20, and like I said, decided to size up. I gave it 5 stars for water resistance even though we haven't had much of a chance to try that out, but I'm pretty sure it's everything Hurtta says it is. I'll update if it's not. I haven't tried out the elastics around her back legs yet as it stays down quite nicely without them. I love all the adjustments. Pros: Very warm, but not heavy or too bulky Not stiff and seems easy to run in. It doesn't hinder her front leg movement at all! She's a crazy dog when running in the snow with it on =) Lots of adjustments to customize fit Harness opening - a must for dogs who use a harness Easy to pop on over her head, bring the chest part between her legs and buckle up Cons: Pretty pricey, but hopefully it will last as long as most Hurtta coats The color is really bright! It would be nice if they offered this with more color options Hurrta makes quality products and since my girl is not quite 2, I expect to get lots of use out of this coat so it justifies the cost. I highly recommend it!

Can I give it 10 stars?
I don't generally like buying dog items that need to be sized online, however the chart provided in the listing is comprehensive and resulted in a perfect fit the first time. I chose the Hurtta Summit Parka since we live in the PNW where it's cold, wet, and/or snowy for 4-6 months out of the year. I've heard a general rule of thumb is that if you are cold, your dog is cold, especially for short hair dogs, or dogs without an undercoat. We enjoy getting out in the winter, and snow hiking, but we have a young border collie with no undercoat. His first snow hike he was cold and wet when we got back to the car, and he curled up in a little ball on the way home slowly stretching out as he warmed up. Our next snow hike he had the Summit Parka. When we got back to the car, only his legs, face and tail were wet, and it was warm under the coat. He did not curl up in a ball on the way home. I'm 100% sold. Once our puppy is full size he will also be getting a Summit Parka. The coat is exceptional quality. It's easy to get on and off, and has a few adjustment points if you want to snug it up (which we haven't needed to yet). It does not slip around, and he hikes as if he isn't wearing a coat. He's done about 11 miles over two weekends with plenty of running, and jumping around on logs and rocks. It does not impede his agility or speed. The top layer is a water resistant material and under is a fleece layer. For our upper 20's - low 40's hiking weather it will be perfect. Highly recommended!

Design could be improved upon slightly, but overall, a great jacket.
I REALLY like this coat for my dog, especially because of the way it’s easy to take on or off. I will say, I didn’t factor in the little back leg straps, which can get stretched out and actually bother my dog (I think) - she’s always rubbing against fences and snowbanks and the ground because I think they maybe itch her, so that is kind of a downside, because without them, the coat shifts around a lot and you really need them in order for it to stay balanced/even. The straps also adds to the time it takes to put it on and take it off. It were just the buckle, it would be SUPER easy. Dogs learn to just back out of the coat while you take it off over their head. I do wish the back straps were altered to be almost like little pants/shorts/sleeves for the back legs. It would take more time to put the coat on, but I think it would be more sturdy and less likely to shift around (because with the straps, it can still shift from side to side). With little leg holes, it would stay on better and maybe not itch the dog the way the straps do. And like I said, the straps do get stretched out somewhat, and they tend to fray. Otherwise, the quality of this coat is top notch. The fabric, the design, the fit- its beautiful. I have also noticed that the reflective coating on one side has come off, but not terribly so. It’s really a great coat and I would buy another if needed another. I don’t notice needing the cinch cords that much, but it is a nice option to have them. I think the level of warmth is perfect, and we live in a very cold climate. I just washed the coat for the first time and it went through a regular wash cycle and dryer just fine.

The only jacket that is worth every penny
Such a great jacket! We were going to pheasant hunt in Kansas in January and needed two jackets for both our dogs. We ordered so many and returned all of them except these. The Filson one didn't fit right and was only secured by velcro, the Orvis one fit way weird (snug under chest and huge around neck) and again was flimsy velcro, the neoprene ones didn't fit right at all (again tight around the chest and huge around the neck), and so many others didn't work. We have a 43lb Lewellyn Setter and a 57lb English Setter. Both have deep chest and are physically very fit (not overweight at all). The sizing chart for this particular jacket runs large. We had to size down for both otherwise there would have been too much material around the back end (looked like they were wearing a dress and I wanted them to not get caught up in anything in the field). One size down was perfectly matched from their neck to their tale. This jacket is so customizable it's just awesome. The back end can be cinched to come up a bit, there are two areas on the neck that can be cinched if needed, and the strap that goes around the chest has plenty of slack. The strap that goes around the chest can also be clipped under the jacket if you need to hide the strap (I didn't want to risk anything catching on it, so under the jacket it went). Also, out of all of the ones the dogs tried on, they both loved this one. The others they just didn't want to move once they were put on, but this one they happily bounced around and had no issue with me putting it on them. It is so easy to put on too, just slip over the head and secure the straps. It has two straps (one for each leg) at the back that go around each leg to keep the thing down and these did not create any rubbing at all. They have warm fleece inside and the pups were fine in 11 degree weather with snow on the ground. Not a scratch anywhere on these jackets and the bright orange is perfect for seeing my babies far away.

Excellent quality, fit and style!
My dog, Charlie, is a lean lab/hound mix at 35 lbs with especially short/thin hair around her legs. I bought her this parka after I noticed her shivering after about five minutes outside, even with a cheaper fleece-lined jacket from Pet Smart, when the temperature fell below 35 degrees. This Hurtta parka is a high quality product--it kept her warm for upwards of an hour during our Christmas day hike when it was 28 degrees outside. Charlie loves wearing it too--she'll stick her nose into the parka so I can slip it over her head! Besides keeping her warm in subzero temperatures, it's easy to put on, feels comfy, gives her the freedom to move around, and looks adorable to boot. I love how the cherry pink pops against her black coat. Using the measurement instructions, I bought her an 18" parka, which fits her length-wise; the chest strap is extremely adjustable, as is the area around the neck, but not as much. There's also an opening for a harness, though we don't use that. The only downside is that Charlie didn't immediately take to the straps around the legs. Since she had never worn anything vaguely near her butt before, on her first walk using the parka she stopped every once in a while to lick her butt as if to lick the straps off. She's gotten more used to the leg/butt straps now, but unless she's playing in the dog park, where she rolls around like a maniac, I don't use them because the parka stays snug during a walk/jog/hike without them. I also don't put the straps on her until after she's pooped--don't think they would interfere with the, uh, excretion process but don't want to risk it. Summary: excellent quality, fit and style.

Still getting my dog through Iowa winters!
My mixed breed Beagle/Terrier weighs 30 pounds. Her back measured 19 inches so I bought the 20 inch coat. It was way too big. I thought it would work anyway by cinching up the belt, but I let her run free for about 5 minutes on my 9 acres and she got so tangled up in it that I had to literally cut the coat off her back. So then I bought the 18 inch version, which fits much better. But the coat has several flaws, all mentioned by previous reviewers. The belt buckle is sewn on upside down and it hard to buckle. I have to twist the belt to make the buckle right side up, which buckles easier but is still very stiff, a cheap plastic buckle. The belt does not stay tight--it loosens and that makes the underbelly part sag. The rear straps are useless--I cut them off. Snow gets under the chest/belly part and the fleece gets wet. On the plus side, my dog likes this coat and prances around in it. Except for the buckle, it goes on quickly. It keeps her warm while going outdoors to potty. It will get us through this terrible cold spell currently on-going in the Midwest. I don't see how it would work even for walks, due to the strap loosening. I don't think it's safe for letting the dog run free--too big of a chance of getting tangled up on something. I will use this for the current cold spell, but keep looking for a better overall coat. I think this coat is way overpriced. An $80 coat should be perfect, not have all these issues. 1/6/18 update I have changed my review from 2 stars up to 4 stars. This coat did a great job of getting my dog through a stretch of bitter cold weather. At the worst it was -18 degrees out with -35 wind chill when she went out in the morning. I particularly like the way the coat covers her neck and also her chest area. She was just going in and out for potty breaks, not spending any extra time outside, but still, we got through this period without her catching cold. When she came in, she wasn't shivering very much. Without a coat, she would normally be shivering a lot at much warmer temps than this. So I felt I had to upgrade my rating. The buckle is a real pain in the neck, hard to undo, especially for older hands. And the strap does not stay pulled tight. But the insulation and the overall coverage of the coat is excellent. 12/16/20 update Well, now my review is up to 5 stars. This coat has gotten my dog through several winters. I am so grateful to have a coat she is happy to wear and that keeps her warm. All the little details that bothered me at first don't even matter now. What matters is this coat keeps her warm and dry. The coat has held up so well, it still looks new. Because she is 13 years old now, her hair is thinner and she needs more help. So I think I'll get her the Hurtta extreme warmer coat as well, which appears to have a liner to reflect body heat. But this summit parka is still great for most days. Thank you, Hurtta, for making a great coat and helping my dog.

Perfect Winter Coat, Highly Recommend
I love this coat already. (We will have to see how it does this winter) But I'm already impressed with the quality and sizing. The fit is just awesome. It is super adjustable waist. I have a tall skinny/long dog and normally coats that cover his butt just drape down on him. (Or vice versa, they fit his waist and leave a few inches of his butt uncovered) This jacket fits perfect. I'd recommend using the length as a primary number, because as long as your dogs waist is smaller than the largest waist size you should be set. Even the length can be adjusted to be slightly shorter with the little tail adjustment. This is super easy to put on, and take off. It takes me about 2 seconds to put it on him and then we are ready to go. The material is nice. The inside fleece is soft and the coat feels like it has enough fluff in it to keep him warm through most the winter. When we hit single digits I might need to put an under layer on my pup (he has a really thin coat). But it seems like it'll keep him warm and comfortable from the 40s-10s degrees (F) without any additional layers needed. Only bad note, the little spandex strips that go around his back legs (this keeps the back coat flaps from blowing in the wind) are super long/loose (again he's a tall skinny dog) but with 15 mins and my sewing kit I'll be able to custom fit these to my pup. So it . shouldn't really be an issue, and it's such a minor detail since the main points of the coat fit him perfect. Honestly I wish I found this jacket sooner, its well worth the price.
