5-HTP 100mg, 240 Vegetarian Capsules (5-Hydroxytryptophan) - Non-GMO & Gluten Free

I was skeptical at first if 5-HTP would really do anything for me, especially with the limited research and study data out there and how little information there is on long term side effects, however i decided on a whim to just buy it and give it a shot and i'm so happy I did. Ever since I started taking 5-htp, i've been much happier or its been easier to let myself be happy and less irritable, I often notice that as a result of this ive been keeping good posture while walking places as a result of my good mood, and that I feel like i've been walking with meaning. Personally I take 1 100 mg pill in the morning, with liquid, after eating as a common use of 5-HTP along side helping with sleep and lessening anxiety, is that of reducing appetite and since I am slender enough as is, i make sure to eat before taking the pill, plus generally it's better to take meds/supplements not on an empty stomach, then another 100 mg pill later in the afternoon if I feel like I need it to ride me through the rest of the day. Its not really possible to tell if its wonderful effect on me is due to it effectively converting to serotonin in my body and making me feel great or placebo or a combination of them both, but it doesn't really matter if at the end of the day its still providing the same positive effect on me. I do, however, want to say that if you want to start taking this because something happened in your life or you've been hit with a wave of "badness" or whatever, please keep in mind you're still directly playing with your bio-chemistry, neuro-chemistry, and neurotransmitters which obviously one small little mistake could make your body essentially kill itself. So while there is limited research, If you're on any other medication, esspecially those that also effect your neuro-chemistry (dopamine, oxytocin or some other serotonin related medicine such as stimulants or anti-depressants) or heart related medication, please be safe and find out as much information as you can and if needed consult your doctor and if you decide to take it, dont go in on a full dose, start with opening the capsules and throwing out most of the powder and taking only like 30mg or so to watch out for any side effects and that way if anything bad happens, it won't be nearly as severe as if you were to take a whole dose. Overall 10/10 experience personally, and this company seems to be pretty good, just be safe and do your research.

It did help my sleep - 1 capsule at bedtime - for 2 nights. On the 3rd night, I took the cap but something came up and I didn't go to bed. About 3 hours later, I had a glass of wine and then fell asleep. I woke up about 3 hours later with severe leg cramps in both legs, got up to get some water and magnesium, and then BLACKED OUT and my husband yelling at me didn't wake me up. He finally roused me by physically jostling and moving me around. Turns out that 5-HTP + alcohol can trigger SEROTONIN SYNDROME which is basically too much serotonin and it can cause severe side effects and can even be fatal!!! The thought did enter my head but it had been 3 hours so I thought it was ok, plus there was No warning on the label. Even 3 hours was Not enough! Look it up. Search for '5-HTP ok to take with alcohol' and you'll find medical websites saying that, although it hasn't been 'proven' by studies, there've been LOTS of reports of people blacking out, having seizures, leg cramps, and even dying because they took it with alcohol. The same can happen with other OTC nutriceuticals, illicit drugs like cocaine, etc. I am NOT saying this product isn't good. As you can see, I gave it 5 stars because it works. But I now have a healthy respect for its potency. Manufacturers should LABEL it 'Do Not take with alcohol' but they won't do that until the FDA states conclusively that there's a connection. In the meantime, I'd be careful with ANY supplement intended to help with sleep. Never mix them and never with alcohol, even a few hours apart. I was lucky.

I have found 5htp to really help stabilise moods as I've got older. Have been taking it for over a year, now reducing the dose to ease off it and this is such good value compared to previous brand. I don't understand why we can't get it freely 8n Australia so, thank you, Amazon for importing this for me.
