An alien with an appetite for blood & disembowelment is set loose on a small town when it's spacecraft crashes. Sheriff Jack Cinder & local militia arrive on scene, a violent battle ensues, leaving only Jack, his deputy & a wild-eyed redneck as survivors. With a corrupt mayor unwilling to stand up against the Nightbeast's reign of carnage, it's up to Jack to evacuate the townsfolk & save the day! This review pertains to the Troma blu-ray released on 2/23/21
"Nightbeast" (1982) was made for a miniscule $14,000 by infamous writer & director Don Dohler. The plot involves an alien space craft which crash lands on Earth in a rural small town. The alien pilot inside goes on a rampage and the residents of the town attempt to stop it. Pretty simple but it gets the job done. The acting is wooden but fits the low budget drive in feel. The gore effects are pretty decent considering how extremely small the budget was. The look of the murderous alien is pretty goofy and reminded me of Rawhead Rex in the way the face is stuck in a static expression. For fans of drive-in schlock, it is great for a ton of laughs. The film was originally released on DVD by Troma way back in 2004 featuring a full frame 1.33:1 transfer (which is the film's intended aspect ratio) that was murky and dark. There were some cool extras though including a commentary track. Vinegar Syndrome gave the film its blu-ray debut back in 2019 featuring a 2K scan of the original 16mm negative in a 1.33:1 full frame aspect ratio. This release received terrific reviews for both the quality of the transfer and extras. Troma in 2021 would re-release "Nightbeast" on blu-ray. The Troma disc does not feature the film in its intended 1.33:1 aspect ratio but crops it instead to 1.78:1 widescreen. There are some points where the film seems cramped on the top and bottom of the frame but generally it did not seem that any important information was lost but I wish that Troma would have kept this release full frame since their prior DVD was. There is nothing mentioned on the case where this transfer derives from but overall everything looks decent. The film is presented utilizing the AVC codec at a rock solid bit rate usually staying in the low to mid 20. The film was shot using a lot of soft focus and fog filters so that does impact the amount of detail visible at many points throughout. I do not have the Vinegar Syndrome disc on hand to compare but if it is a safe bet that the picture quality surpasses the Troma release. Sound is presented in regular 2.0 channel DVD quality. This continues Troma's trend of refusing to put lossless audio on their blu-ray releases. All things considered though I thought it sounded fine. No English subtitles are included. Extras are as follows: - Special intro with Lloyd Kaufman (2 min. 7 sec.) - Original DVD intro (2 min. 18 sec.) - Audio commentary with director Don Dohler and star George Stover - Outakes & bloopers (6 min. 40 sec.) - Crashing the set with John Ellis (14 min. 30 sec.) - Shooting the Nightbeast with Richard Geiwitz (18 min. 54 sec.) - Nightbeast returns with the cast & crew (24 min. 58 sec.) - Visual FX gallery (4 min. 16 sec.) - Original theatrical trailer (1 min. 57 sec.) Overall this is a nice blu-ray release of "Nightbeast" by Troma notwithstanding the cropping of the movie to widescreen. The Vinegar Syndrome release does feature an additional interview as well as presenting the film in its 1.33:1 intended aspect ratio but runs about 10 dollars more than the Troma release. If you don't mind the cropping then the Troma disc is pretty decent with nice extras though if you already have the Vinegar Syndrome disc there is absolutely no reason to get the Troma re-release. Due to the cropping, I will give the Troma disc 4 stars out of 5.

Drive in , on your tv.
I love this movie. Every time I pop it in, I have my popcorn 🍿 and it makes me feel like I am back at the drive in watching it. It's a really fun, 🧀 movie like Killer Clowns from outer space was. Sit back a laugh and enjoy Abrams awesome musical score. The cops are like vintage Reno 911. Love this movie

Good price for Night Beast
Hard to find on vhs and syndrome bluray. The prices for Night Beast are fairly high on ebay so I'm glad troma put this out so more can have access to it. Only complaints are that it's not in original 4:3 aspect ratio, it's stretched out to fit 16:9. Also not subtitles

I loved this movie
This movie has special effects 10 times better than Star Wars. The one scene where the spaceship shoots an asteroid, amazing. The characters and their acting abilities are second to none. The movie really pulls you in with the story…like Shawshank Redemption but with better actors and a much more solid plot. I generally don’t like love scenes but there’s one in this move that just has you falling in love with both characters. In no way awkward at all. The creature from this movie is so incredibly realistic and frightening. It makes the creature from “Alien” look like a Pomeranian in comparison. From the looks of it I’d say this movie had a budget of way over $100 million. Just the filming locations alone look to be exotic and tantalizing. A true “Must See!”

CULT CLASSIC?
There are a number of low budget horror and science fiction films that were made in the past that have developed a loyal following since their release. These film either played the grindhouse/drive-in circuit or went straight to video. The cover art on the boxes in video stores was enough to guarantee they’d be rented if not enjoyed by customers at the time. As time passed on though those who remember them fondly often seek them out only to be disappointed they aren’t available. That’s all changed in the last few years. Boutique distributors like Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow Video and Shout Factory have gone back and breathed new life into these films. Also on the front is Troma Video. Releasing mostly films from their long catalog on occasion you’ll find something different there. Like NIGHTBEAST. The film opens with a spaceship flying along that gets hit by an asteroid. This forces it to crash land on earth where a group of hunters come across the ship and then notify the local authorities. When they return to investigate on their own a hideous alien rises from the ship and shoots them with a disintegrator ray. The creature wreaks havoc on anyone it encounters never once trying to communicate with anyone. It just shows up and zaps them away. When the sheriff and a group of men attack it they find that bullets have no effect. Recruiting a sharpshooter they shoot the weapon and disarm the alien at a cost of lives though. The sheriff informs the mayor of what is going on but, typical politician, he has an event scheduled as a fund raiser for the governor. He refuses to cancel and of course things go bad. The alien continues to kill those he encounters and the body count rises. Only time will tell if they can find a way to destroy this nightbeast. There are subplots involved throughout the film as well. A bit of jealousy, some interaction between the two guys in love with the same reason and their own confrontation. The sheriff is wounded and his deputy takes him to her house to heal. Of course they end up in bed together. The end result is a movie that’s either so bad it’s good or just bad. But like I said it has its own following. I wasn’t aware until reading about the film that it was a sequel to a film called THE ALIEN FACTOR. I can’t say that this inspired me to go looking for that one. For me sitting through this one was bad enough. There are some decent effects in here but not enough to override the bad acting and a creature with a well-made mask that doesn’t do much. There is no depth to the story of the alien which would seem the focus of the film. Instead there is a lot of talking back and forth between actors who should talk less. For me this isn’t a film I’ll be going back to watch. But I know there are fans out there who will be pleased to see it make its way to blu-ray. The extras will be something they’ll love as well including an introduction by Troma founder and owner Lloyd Kaufman (you gotta love Lloyd). There are bloopers and outtakes, an FX gallery and more. Fans, pick this one up. Everyone else, view at your own risk. Or create a drinking game around the film.

Alien Factor and Nightbeast
Alien Factor and Nightbeast are my two favorite Don Dohler films, so it was great to see that BOTH of them are now available on blu-ray! I love the Nightbeast creature created by special effects genius John Dods.
