The Merriam-Webster Dictionary Mass Market Paperback – June 1, 2004

I wasted a lot of gasoline looking for a simple paperback dictionary that didn't cost double digits. Gave them to some kids in my congregation with the assignment each week to look up the definition of a big word I used in my sermon that day. Told the kids that when the power when out and they couldn't access Google, they would not have to be stupid! It is really packed with definitions; more than sufficient for the vocabulary I use (except the words I make up; preachers do that). Print is on the small size, but I could read it well enough without exposing my presbyopia. It was exactly what I was hoping to find.

I wanted a dictionary that would be a great size to have by my side while I read books, in case I need to look up a word. This dictionary fits the bill perfectly. About the size of a mass market paperback, this dictionary is easy to hold and look through, compared to a larger, more unwieldy dictionary. I have only had a word or two that I could not find in it so far...and there are many other pieces of information that make up for the lack of the esoteric word or two...a periodic taps, some maps, etc.

This dictionary is highly recommended! I started college this year, earning my Bachelors Degree in English and have taken it upon myself to increase my vocabulary. I had a different dictionary (I can't remember the name at the moment) that was not very clear and concise with their definitions. This dictionary gets right to the point with easily decipherable definitions, using simple and understandable words. I cuts down, what could potentially be a long and perplexing definition, in just a few words. I love this dictionary and will continue to use it.

My 4th grader needed a dictionary for his daily homework and this one fits the bill. I love that it's compact, but not tiny. My only complaint is that it doesn't break the words down into syllables with the actual spelling, just with the way it sounds.

Prior to ordering from Amazon, I checked several places, including a well known LARGE chain store and couldn't find a good paper back dictionary.A short search on Amazon and I found just what I wanted at a reasonable cost.I do puzzles in the newspaper and like the convenience of the paper back version which is much easier to handle than my large dictionary. Since I've been using the paper back copy, I haven't had to refer to my larger heavier version.Thank you for providing quality merchandise at reasonable prices.

There are many pages in this dictionary that aren't necessary. There are sections such as "geographical names", "biographical names", and "foreign words and phrases", that I would never need to reference. I use this dictionary to refer to whilst I'm reading. Currently, I've had about a 50% chance of finding the word I am looking to define. I think those (in my opinion) filler pages should be replaced with more words and definitions. I realize this is not a "complete" dictionary however, I thought my chances of finding a word I need defined would be better than this.

I am a teacher of young gifted readers. They need a collegiate dictionary for the caliber of words they read (from old classics such as Heidi, Call of the Wild, Bambi, etc.) Since the kids are small, they need a lighter weight dictionary than the bound copies. It is small so fits in their hands and book bags. It has worked very well for their needs. The only suggestion is that the dictionary be bound in such a way that it doesn't want to flip shut but wants to remain open a bit better.

Great for looking up things.
