are these good for school? Fountain pens fascinate me but im also going into high school in september...

Looking at these pens for my son and came across this question. Realized this kid has now graduated.....maybe. Did they work? How was high school?

Do these pens come in all the different colors that it has on the top of the pens?

Yes the colors are the same as the tops and are rich and true, not faded out. The ink, in these Pilot Varsity fountain pens flows very freely which makes them smooth writing but be careful with cheaper grades of paper the ink will bleed and show through to the other side.

Will these survive a plane flight?

Most fountain pens have issues flying. The traditional fix is to make sure they are nib up when they pressurize the cabin. The problem is the air in the barrel with the ink, by holding the pen nib up the air can come out through the feed. Depending on feed design and just how big the air bubble is (the more ink you have left the smaller the bubble) you can usually avoid the problem. Your mileage will vary of course. If you really need a fountain pen that won't leak on a flight consider one with a stopper system that seals the reservoir off from the feed. Several vacuum filler pens have this feature along with a few eyedropper pens. Take a look at the TWSBI Vac 700 or an Opus 88. They cost considerably more but they have a built in solution to your problem.

I'm returning to fountain pens after a long absence. Would it be better to start out with this product or head instead for a permanent fountain pen?

I would recommend you give these a shot, just so you get the hang of using fountain pens again. When I first started to use FPs, I used a very heavy hand-a habit from the ballpoint and rollerball days. Thankfully, I was only using disposable pens so I didn't end up ruining the nibs.Although I've moved on to more expensive pens, I still keep these around. They're good value for money and are good writers as well.

I should have bought these much sooner

These write amazingly smooth for the price. The pens hold a decent amount of ink as well. Technically, they are disposable but you can refill them with a little bit of effort either by removing the nib and the housing or using a pvc tubing. The caps fit really well and they won't easily dry out as long as you close the caps.
