I loved this story and read it to my children who now understand a bit more of SA history through a lived personal story they can identify with. The fictional characters were very well described and the settings and scenes made you feel like you were really there. I’d like to thank the author as it deals with a unjust piece of history in a sensitive way through the experiences of people most affected, something that is often missing in history. Would thoroughly recommend it.

Lovely book
I was worried that this book would be too sad for me to read with my kids. Fortunately they were ok and it was a lovely read, but it left me with a deep sense of sadness for every domestic worker in South Africa. It is not a sad ending thank goodness, but so many people were/are not as lucky.

I bought this to read to my Y4 class and they were enthralled. It is a great read with lots of interesting detail about life in South Africa and apartheid. I recommend it; it's informative, sobering but appropriate for children.

A Must Read for Children
A simple but pedigree piece of work about a poor black family in apartheid South Africa. Totally absorbing and thought provoking throughout. Its a short novel (some 88 pages) with added sections from Naidoo and Rosen and a copy of the notice banning the book's publication in SA. More a piece of history than just a simple tale of hardship.
