Batman Vol. 11: The Fall and the Fallen

Batman vs Batman

Just Okay (And That's Okay!)
Everything in fandom these days is binary: you either love something like a religious zealot or hate it so much that it's like the author did something heinous to your family. Sometimes, things are just okay. This volume is just okay. There are things to really like in this volume--King attempts to tie together various threads in his run so far to make some sense of the plot against Batman. He gives some depth to the pseudo Father/Son relationship between Flashpoint Thomas Wayne and Bruce in ways that give you some things to think about. If someone loved Bruce Wayne, as Selina Kyle and Thomas Wayne seem to, would they want Bruce to continue to be the Bat, or give it up entirely? But, there are also questionable creative choices in this TPB, no question about it. For example, there is way more telling than showing in this TPB (maybe because King's Batman run was shortened). From the literal explanation of Bane's machinations against Batman, to Thomas' rationale for joining him, to Alfred's lampshading speech about exactly when and where Batman falls to his lowest, you have to wonder if maybe less wordy, overly-detailed explanations and more direct character choices would have done the job. Likewise, you have to suspend your disbelief more than usual in King's run thus far if you want to believe the plot against Batman--it not only requires you to believe that Batman is more superhuman than usual as he tears through Arkham, but that Bane (and every single one of his minions) is so skilled at human psychology that even superficial or subconscious triggers can profoundly influence significant events.Ultimately, on balance, this is compelling storytelling, great art, and a very interesting ride in the Batman mythos. It's 3 stars for sure, but that's not because I think it's trash. Just, sometimes, some things are worth 3 stars. But if you've been following along, it's still worth the purchase and the effort to keep going, I think.

Finally, the story moves forward
At least something happens in this volume. The story progresses, albeit fast as the flash. Tom King really has super fast plot points mixed in with issues upon issues of filler. Almost like he's not a good writer hmmmmm.....Anyways, this volume picks it up a bit. The best part is that is has Batman Secret Files #2 which is a conglomerate of 5 or so short stories that are actually quite enjoyable.
