Not suited for me as a learning book
I was hoping to find a book that would provide clear explanations about concepts and best practices.Although the book is well written, it is written in a moving train kind of way. There are no checkpoints, questions or exercises to get to work with the concepts. This was -to me - frustrating to the point I put the book aside.

Excellent companion book for Java students
I got this as a companion text to my main textbook. I really struggled with Java and had to retake the course this semester, and this book really helps to break down concepts into little baby steps to help give you a grounded understanding of everything. I'm doing so much better than my last attempt. Whenever I can't wrap my head around something, I whip out my Dummies book for that little extra push.

Overall Provides a Good Flow to Learning Java, but Beware of Mistakes!
This book is packed full of Java content and a good price for the amount of content that you get. Unfortunately what prevents this from being an amazing book to learn Java from is the sheer amount of simple mistakes that are in this book. You will see this as early as learning about increment and decrement operators. There's no need to go into any specific examples due to the amount of them and the fact that even if you are a begginer in Java you will notice them from testing code and just reading the book. Extra proof reading and code testing should have conducted before releasing this book. I'm confident the author at least knows what they are talking about, they have just made such obvious mistakes from not proof reading. The fact this is a 6th edition book as well makes the mistakes all the more embarrasing.Overall it's an okay book to learn Java from because of the amount of content there is and the order in which you are taught Java principles, but the mistakes in it are so careless and make it worth looking for other books or sources to learn Java. I would give 2.5 stars if possible but will round up to 3 given that the price is low. I should also say don't be put off buying other For Dummies books because of this, there are some great books on other topics in the For Dummies series!
