Light passes through these. They should be opaque. Look for items with a weight of about 3-ounces. They are stronger and more reflective (better).

would this work as an insulator to wrap around a cat house to help keep the cat that's inside it warm or does it require direct body heat?

Why are they showing usage in pics 'backwards' for keeping your body heat in?

I don’t know what you mean by backwards. They are the same on both sides. They are not meant to be long term blankets. They are emergency use. You may have seen some on the news on immigrants. While they could possibly be used more than once, they are pretty much designed as a single use item. Also, it you happen to get caught in a forest fire flash over, you can use one of these to survive.
