Although there are infinitely many sequences you can set as the combination, the lock has only 7,500 internal positions, not counting the reset position. This means that if you set a particular sequence to open the lock, there are infinitely many other sequences that will also open the lock. For example, if you set the combination to LURL (left-up-right-left), the lock will also open with the sequence RLL. Some people consider this a bug or defect, I think it is simply a technical aspect that is not disclosed to consumers because the mechanical explanation is too complex for the average consumer. One of the interesting takeaways from this paper is that every sequence longer than 11 moves is equivalent to some sequence of 11 or fewer moves. In my opinion, the Blue is the worst for visibility. The stickers are dark blue with black text - almost impossible for me to read except under a bright light. However, the great thing about these locks is that once you remember the sequence you don't have to be able to read the sticker labels. Also you can choose a simple sequence or a more difficult one. For my work locks I use an eight movement sequence. For my son's lock I use a four movement sequence. I love these locks.

If I understand your question: it only allows four directions (up, down, left, right.) But what I think you're getting at is how many steps you can add. In that case, you can enter pretty much as many steps as your like (Gismodo used 30 steps successfully). Personally, I've set mine for eight, giving 1:65,563 odds (and that's only if a stranger knew that I had used eight, which they wouldn't.) If you want to use five, that's fine, and will give the odds of 1:1024 (assuming it was publicly known that you only used five steps.)
