We purchased one about two years ago and at first it worked great, for about two months. Then it simply stopped lifting the cork. It would screw into the cork, then, when it was supposed to lift the cork, it would instead back out. I called the company and they said I was not using it correctly. Really? I took some time to examine the mechanism. It is actually a two step process, There are to parts that move: the screw, which is directly connected to the handle via the gear mechanism and then the floating arm that allows the cork to lift or extract the cork from the screw. Seems when you make the first lift the handle, once it extends fully, the arm is supposed to seat against the cork. Mine would not complete the seat process. So I fooled with it using really loose corks, etc., and finally got to function correctly. It then worked as advertised for about three more months. Then pieces began falling off. There are these little football shaped oval inserts on either side of the floating arm, they began to come out of either side on a regular basis and the pin can work out. Not good. The the main gear pin fell out. WTF? There is some sort of cap that is pushed in one side to hold it. Honestly, not a screw or anything like that, but just a fitting. Try putting that back together correctly after you've had a couple glass of wine that you struggled to open. Exasperating. Finally, one of the arms simply broke off while trying to extract a synthetic cork. I've gone back to a good old trusty manual lever opener that served me well through two years of bar tending in college. When the Metrokane works, it worked great. But I mostly found this a great mechanical design assembled with inferior parts and equally poor securing of said pats. These guys need to look at how a Harley is build.
