Many important gems of knowledge in a small book
5-minute sketching: Landscapes Super-quick Techniques for Amazing Drawings is a mighty little book. Urban sketching has grown in interest (see an urban sketch of the Place de la Republique in Paris, France, Guilin, P.R. of China, and Faro, Portugal, Crater Lake, Oregon, and the Blue Mosque, Istanbul, Turkey by the reviewer, Bur Oak). I have been teaching students to draw on-site for over twenty years in primarily Europe and Asia. 20 years ago, there were few books that were very helpful on the subject-- mostly just sketching books focused upon line/contour drawing. Virginia Hein's book is absolutely packed with time-tested wisdom about sketching in the field. There are many beautiful examples to study in the small and light weight 128 page book-- when sketching around the world, take the book and use it as an inspirational reference-- this book is truly worth studying again and again. Many of Virginia's examples appear to be watercolor, still the examples are great for marker, pastel, and colored pencil, plus of course line drawings. Virginia has a keen eye for observation and can translate what she is seeing and thinking into magical sketches. If one is a beginner, and try to do all at once everything Virginia suggests, while seemingly simple, it may become an unaccomplishable and overwhelming task. But everything Virginia suggests is true from a normative sense concerning the principles that guide good drawings/sketches. For example, her first suggestion "Take time to really see" is an extremely valuable statement. Yet, it may take years to develop the trained eye to "really see." It is clear that Virginia has a sharp mind to see. Drawing/sketching is a lifetime journey. It is not like a math problem where there is one correct answer; instead there are many at times opposing choices-- Virginia's book presents these choices. Even though the book is only 128 pages, it has lessons and suggestions that may take much of a lifetime to fully understand and appreciated. I show this book to all my students before they go overseas sketching for 7 to 8 weeks. No matter what level of sketching an individual is at, this book is very useful.Sometimes, I get young students who believe they are going to be able to sketch like Virginia Hein in 5 minutes. After all her sketches look easy, loose, and friendly. Yet to the trained eye, Virginia's examples show the hand of a seasoned professional with dedicated passion. My suggestion is to take Virginia's suggestions one or two ideas at a time until it is part of the natural character of the drawer/sketcher. Then move on to more suggestions. It may take several hundred sketches by the drawer/sketcher to begin to grasp and fully appreciate all the ideas presented in this small book. Yet each little suggestion is presented in a friendly and uncomplicated manner. If one feels that one is in a drawing "dead-end" or not making progress, this book is inspirational and may help one to improve and forge ahead just by adopting one or two of the suggestions. If one can freely accomplish all the suggestions that are presented in Virginia's book, maybe it is time for your book. :>)This book is a lifetime keeper for the drawing/sketching library.

Useful size to put in your bag to take out with you en plein air sketching .
Liked this book very much, it reminds you of techniques and other media to use when out and about sketching. The examples shown are helpful, as well as an easy to read text. The chapters are short, with clear headings which make it a joy to dip into. I thoroughly recommend this book.
