Is there a spring mechanism on it that will eventually wear down?

There is no separate spring mechanism. The arms on each hook stay in place using the springiness of the metal they are made of, and the lock rings hold in place by shoving in between the spring arms and the body of the caribiner. The lock rings do wear down though, and after about 3 months of every day use (keychain), the lock ring slides down after a few minutes

Can someone tell me would this hold a full 1/2 gal canteen?

It holds a 5# bag (dry weight), not sure about liquids but it should be good.

how do they open? i bought to hang my sandals from my pack.

There's a slider on the part that swings open that you lodge into a groove to keep it closed. It works really well but a bit difficult to open one-handed.
