Another fine adventure
This book was a delight to read. The target audience are French speaking youngsters from 8 to 12 but Monsieur Thil's books also have a following with foreign students wishing to improve and maintain their knowledge. They are ideal for this purpose for a number of reasons. An advanced beginner (A2 level in the EC proficiency standards) will be able to handle this short work with help from a dictionary. As many words that may be unfamiliar or forgotten can be determined through context, it will not require a great deal of consultation.More advanced students such as myself find it useful for maintaining vocabulary and language patterns. The writer uses good standard French without slang which, while colorful, sounds silly coming from a non-native speaker and contains numerous pitfalls for the unwary. The story is told primarily through spoken dialogue in the present and past perfect with no fancy convolutions in less used tenses. This is invaluable for those of us who are non-native and do not spend much time in a French speaking environment.Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, Marc Thil's stories are well written and exciting much as is some of the excellent English juvenile literature; for example, the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew series. The two amateur detectives in Le Mystère de la falaise rouge, Axel and Violette are much like their American counterparts in many regards.Merci, Marc Thil !

Aslo Good for Adult Learners of French
As an adult I am perhaps not the target audience for Marc Thil's books; nonetheless, I have enjoyed them as I continue to learn French. Like many people, I have trouble getting excited about trying to learn from tables of verb conjugations, vocabulary lists, etc. I would much rather read something that's entertaining. These short books are reminiscent of the old Hardy Boys mysteries. If you can read the Petit Nicolas books (I highly recommend them), you should be able to handle these. One thing I particularly like is that many of Thil's books (including this one) are written mainly in the present tense. In my opinion this makes them a little easier for learners of French compared to stories written in the "passé simple" tense, which, as I understand it, shows up only in written works. Incidentally, I am referring to the Kindle editions: They are very reasonably priced (at least at the time of this writing) and work fine on my Paperwhite.I have also read the following books by Marc Thil and recommend them as well: Le Mystère de la fillette de l'ombre (French Edition) Vacances dans la tourmente (French Edition) Histoire du chien Gribouille (French Edition) Histoires à lire le soir (French Edition) Histoires à lire le soir 2 (French Edition) Histoires à lire le soir 3 (French Edition) 40 Fables d'Ésope en BD (French Edition) Note that the "Histoires à lire le soir" are actually collections of short stories and "40 Fables d'Ésope en BD" is in the bande dessinée (comic strip) format, which wasn't ideal on my Kindle but certainly worked well enough. Bonne lecuture!

Another wonderful book by Mark Thil
My French class is in the middle of this book right now. We love it--the story is interesting, even for adults. The French is exactly the right level for us--difficult enough to be challenging. We are learning new vocabulary and grammar. We have loved all the books written by Marc Thil and hope that he continues to write. We also appreciate that his books are affordable.

Comprehensible Input! High A1 - B1
Great way to improve your French! Best for upper beginners to lower intermediate level.. it’s truly great as is isn’t made for language learners, so it isn’t some contrived story that tries to use all the grammar rules and such. Recommend!

Bom treinamento do francês.
Recomendo muitíssimo a série desses livros.

Teacher/parent review
I purchased this book online because I want my 10 year-old (francophone) child to read more. Content wise this book (as well as other books from this series) is pretty dull, but its recycles the vocabulary so that the child can enrich his/her vocabulary range, which is always a good thing. I don't think I will be purchasing more of these books.
