I would say as much as possible to keep their hands open.

Will this help keep my mom's hands from locking in a fist? she has gbs an as the nerves come back her fingers are locking

Not the best product for that because the fingers are difficult to get in the loops.

Can you wear this while sleeping or will it just fall off?

My mother had a stroke and her left hand is contracted. It never falls off. I have continued to buy these for her over and over. She has about 7 of them and we cycle them through the wash when they get dirty. They are wonderful
