Sony35mm f/1.4 G Master E-Mount Full-Frame Prime Lens – Ideal for Street, Portrait, and Low-Light Photography

I’ve always been a huge fan of the 50mm focal length, with a 50 almost permanently mounted on a camera. I shoot a lot of products for my own business using the 50mm but as circumstances changed, I could no longer get far away enough to use a 50mm for some instances… This led me to take a look at a 35mm lens and it’s the best thing I did. I know some people don’t like 35mm because it’s neither long nor really wide, making it ‘boring’… But that’s why I love it; It really is a ‘do it all’ focal length. This particular lens is now permanently attached to my camera. It is not wide enough to distort perspective too much when shooting products or environmental portraits, it’s perfect for street, events and travel and wide enough for many landscape type images. Autofocusing is instant and accurate, and the focusing distance is also extremely close, making it brilliant for almost macro type shots with a razor thin f1.4 focus area. No matter what I’m doing, I know it will do the job without too many compromises. Obviously it’s no use for sports and wildlife… But that should go without saying! As I’m sure you already know, this 35mm GM is as good as it gets. One of the sharpest lenses out there at any focal length and pretty much optically perfect. Build quality is excellent and while the barrel is mostly plastic, this aids to keep the weight down, making it very nicely balanced on-camera. The lens hood is very nice, plastic construction with a locking mechanism and soft rubber ring around the outer edge to soften impacts and keep the camera steady should you either to place it lens-down on a table top. Just a nice detail. I just can’t fault anything about the lens including the price it is often available for via Amazon. It’s very well priced for a lens with literally no compromises. If you need a 35mm lens or just want to spend your budget on a single professional grade prime lens as opposed to a zoom to ‘do it all’… I wouldn’t look any further.

I was looking forward to receiving this lens as I had heard good things about it. But wow, it surpassed my expectations immediately. The colour rendition and sharpness of the images are easily some of the highest quality I have seen produced with my camera. It is not a small lens, but it is not too big either and although it has a noticable weight it can be carried for long periods of time without tiring your arms. Since receiving the lens I have spent a few entire days with this on my camera (during testing). I'm pretty sure it has jumped to being my favourite lens that I own and it is already the default lens I have on my camera. The minimum focusing distance is short enough to get close to flowers for some pretty detail shots. It auto focuses extremely quickly and is accurate. When turning the camera on, the focus motors on my lens make a brief 'clunk' sound as the motors activate which is a little disconcerting but I guess they are just moving into position and it stops after a couple of seconds. After that it is very quiet. I've include some photos that were created with this lens, beyond this I have also taken some portraits which have come out beautifully (but I lack the permission to include them here). Even when opened up fully to f1.4 the images are clean and sharp with great contrast and colour. The lens comes with a lens hood and a pouch to put the lens in when not on your camera. This pouch is able to be attached to a belt and also comes with a shoulder strap if you prefer to carry it that way. It is a far more practical pouch than I have received with previous lenses. I can't really recommend this lens enough, if you are considering it.

I didn't think anything could drag me away from the 24mm f1.4 GM but the 35mm f1.4 GM has! I would say this is the best lens I have ever used in 12 years of working as a full time photographer. Super sharp, instant autofocus and the bokeh is out of this world. I work full time as a wedding and events photographer, and this lens just adds a little magic to my work, in fact I refer to it as the magic lens, its just that good. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this lens to anyone looking for the best in class.

Superb quality pictures every time! Only now have I realised how good this lens is with some night time shots. Keep your eyes peeled for a good price and extremely good one from Amazon.

Sony lens are usually quality products but I had no opportunity to use this lens as it was sold as new but was clearly used. I returned it to Amazon and then received an email accusing me of returning products that had been used!

I use on a A7RIVa 61 megapixel camera and it is perfectly clear even at a crop of 8 megapixels. The jump to APSC mode gives me about 50mm, I did consider the 50 mm lens as I have the 20 but this is perfect for me.

I've only just begun to use the SEL35F14GM but I've used it to shoot a small video, and some product photos, and it performed competently for both purposes! I was impressed that the lens was physically shorter than what I was expecting. Also the auto-focus is crazy-fast; way quicker than any other Sony lens I've tried. It might make me film video in different ways, relying less on manual focus. The build quality seems fine, the same as any other G lens. It was well packed. I purchased from Amazon at £1299 in Jan 2023.
