I bought this for temperature checking of wax when making candles. Really good little thermometer and works well. Price, average I think for this sort of thing. Battery life good as still going months later.

Now, I've never made candy/sweets before, but actually got this for making sugar wax, which needs to be heated to 240°F/soft ball stage. I failed and overcooked my first freestyle attempt, ending up with a ball that was way too firm to use for sugaring, so I bought this thinking it would help. Well, attempt no. 2, I heated it to 240 according to the thermometer in the pot, and it was still completely clear, which isn't right for sugar wax. So I kept going until the thermometer crept all the way up to 260 (which is hard ball stage). The mixture still looked too pale, but I let it cool, and it ended up more like a very soft, sticky soft ball. No good. Attempt no. 3, I wondered if I shouldn't be leaving the thermometer in the pot, in contact with the bottom of the pan. I tried taking the temperature at intervals, letting the probe cool for a moment, avoiding the bottom of the pan. Again the mixture was completely clear at 240. I tried heating to 260 again and took it off the heating straight away, but that batch ended up too hard?! Maybe it's me, because I have no idea what I'm doing, but this seems to be inaccurate for sugar, but could be fine for meat. Room and body temperature readings were correct.

Easy to use and store when not in use. Accurate readings. Built well and easy to clean.
