Reef Fish Identification: Galapagos

I took Humann's book on Galapagos reef fish identification on a recent cruise of the islands after reading through it twice. We had the opportunity for lots of snorkeling, and the snorkelers on the trip borrowed my Reef Fish Identification: Galapagos constantly during the entire trip.The organization of the book (mainly by shape), the superb photographs, the very clear diagrams indicating diagnostic characteristics, and the descriptions make this a very easy book for the layman to use. The coverage appears to be essentially complete; there were very few fish we were unable to identify. Tropical fish often show a great deal of variation, a point that Humann discusses and illustrates as needed. The book also includes information on the ranges and depths at which the fish are likely to be found, which is very helpful.If you are a snorkeler or scuba diver and are planning a visit to the Galapagos, by all means take a copy of this book. Better yet, take two copies--one to use yourself, and one to loan out, because it will certainly be in demand.Definitely a "must have" for those who plan to explore the waters of these fascinating islands.

Lives up to the quality of the other Humann and DeLoach books, which is very high. I have been able to identify a few fish photos from a previous Galápagos trip which I had failed to ID from other sources. I'll be studying this before I go again.By the way, don't be surprised if the fish distributions have changed since this book was published. Galápagos corals were devastated in the 1982-83 and subsequent bleaching events. This is bound to cause declines in some fish species in areas which have lost most or all of their coral. Of course there are still plenty of fish to see, and where else can you snorkel beside an iguana munching on algae underwater?

I have used Reef Fish Identification books before and loved them, and this one is great too. I wanted a Galapagos ID book for when I study abroad, and this one has great pictures and descriptions.

After reading reviews I was excited to learn about the fish we had photographed with our little underwater camera. Instead, I am very disappointed in the quality of the photos. The fish in the photo is in the book - "blue eyes" is in the description, not in the photo! What is commonly known as the "Black triggerfish" is listed as "Black durgon" with no mention of the other name, and the photo has more color than most online, and the one we took... Not sure I would recommend the book.

No better Fish ID books than the Pau Humann, Ned DeLoach series. Only knock is that they are not available in Kindle format. These are fairly hefty books which limits their travel use. I would love to have both the spiral bound and a Kindle format.

Great info about the underwater Galapagos life. I recommend getting a land animal identification book as well to complete your knowledge. Reef shipped fast and arrived in good conditu8n.

This book is just what we needed. Compact, practical and timely. Attractive and makes you feel under the water all the time that you open

I bought this book as a gift for my daughter who, with friends, is renting a boat to visit the Galapagos Islands. She's a marine biologist and thought the book was quite excellent as a resource book.

年末年始にガラパゴスのダイビングクルーズに行ったとき、クルーズ船に置いてありました。英語の不自由な私と夫以外に誰も日本人がいない中、魚の名前を調べるのに重宝しました。イラストでの細かい魚の見分け方説明や、解説に「ダイバーへの反応」が書いてあるところ、そして魚の写真がかわいいところに惹かれました。下船後、この本を買いたくてエクアドルの首都、キトの本屋で探しましたが見つからず（そもそもエクアドルでは本が高価で売れないため本屋が少ないです）、結局日本に帰って注文しました。本を開いてガラパゴスの思い出に浸ることができます。値段が高いので星1つ減らしました。

ガラパゴスのクルーズ船にあった本で、クルーズ中よく見せてもらってました。日本で購入できてうれしいです。これからガラパゴスに行かれる方にお勧めです。ガラパゴスには固有種が多いので事前に知っておくと海の中でもっと楽しめますよ。
