Great Rhythm, Great Message
I am so glad that I have recently found a love for modern poetry, and there are some amazing collections being written and published right now. Small collections such as this (Impressions by Charnjit Gill) have such power because they flow, from one poem to the next. Similar themes, concerns, voice and rhythm, bound each poem together so that each is standing on the shoulders of the last, like an interlocking chain - similar to Early Modern Sonnet Sequences. Gill’s rhythm particularly struck me. It blurred the line between written poetry and spoken word, or slam poetry. As you read it, the rhythm really jumped from the page, Gill was very playful with rhyme and rhythm with syncopated beats created from internal rhymes.Whilst I am not particularly religious, I appreciate religion’s shared space with poetry. Lots of my favourite poems (particularly from the 18th century) are religious poems. The beauty of someone’s faith really fits the poetic language. Gill’s faith leaked out of every line. While the poems were on a variety of topics, her passion and belief was constant and felt special to read. Also loved the feminist messages!

Modern, Poignant Poetry - would recommend.
Impression is a poetry book which contains a collection of 60 poems. These poems are split into 3 categories; Our Faith, Our Relationships and Ourselves. There is no denying that Charnjit Gill is a talented poet and these poems cover real life topics which personally, is what I want from a poem. The writing and structure is beautiful.I found that for me, alot of the poems related to anxiety, body dismorphia and unhappiness and unacceptable of the self - but thats the beauty with poetry.. it will have a different meaning to every person. My favourite poems from the book are: Hold, Too Loud, See, Change and Fall Asleep. These poems really moved me.I have gone for a 4 star as for me personally as someone who has no faith or religion, I found some of the poems a little difficult to relate to as there are many mentions fo faith/God etc - but this didn't take away from those poems which did speak to me.Would recommend if you're after a poetry book which tackles real life.

A beautiful book
A really lovely read.Impression is spilt into three sections: Our Faith, Our Relationships and Ourselves. As I’m not religious I prob didn’t fully appreciate the poems surrounding faith but I really enjoyed them all the same. As I definitely didn’t find it to be too religion heavy.I tried to note down my fav poems but honestly I wrote like 50% of them 🙂. narrowed down a LOT I would say my top ones were Faith Formation, Hold, Too Loud, Company, Right One and Inherit. Phew. I also really love the way this book flows from one poem to the next. All in all I think this is a beautiful book, a really lovely read. I will reread in the future (which I v rarely do with other books).

Delicately crafted, thought provoking work
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I haven't had much luck with poetry, especially minimalist poetry, which I often find unaccessible but the rhythm and intent of the Gill's words made these poems very raw, readable and easy to comprehend. Some of the poems definitely spoke to me more than others, but each one had a sense of purpose and delicate craftsmanship. The most intriguing and motivational ones to me were the poems On Relationships.I definitely would be interested in reading future poems by Gill. This book was gifted to me by the author in return for an honest review.

Review of Impression
ARC from the authorI’m not really a poetry reader, mostly because I hate to understand what “in-between-the-lines”. Which is why I enjoyed this. It’s more straight forward, and it makes you think. Think about the world around you, your relationships and your self. I found myself really moved by some of them. My favorites being Too Loud, Stop and Inherit (last one made me tear up).Really recommend this if you’re a poetry lover and enjoy poetry that are more “straight forward”. I sent some of them to a friend who are dealing with some personal stuff and it was very fitting. I found the book inspirational and I might read some of them from time to time as a comfort. Thanks for sending me this Charnjit Gill!

Breathtaking!
I'm not an avid poetry reader due to finding them hard to understand. But Gill's work is breathtaking. The poems are so simple (subjectively not linguisticly) yet are so impactful. Her writing style is very unique. It also feels like each poem is an expansion of the previous one, so can be read like a story. Each poem is so motivational that you have to take a minute after reading it just to think about what it means to you personally. Every single poem is absolutely fabulous.

A beautiful collection
"We love the sinner, we hate the sin"This is yet another great collection of poetry that I have had the pleasure of reviewing, and was a great way to break up my current read.My favourite poem, by far, was 'Love The Sinner, Hate The Sin' which was a poem which really resonated with me. As did 'Healer'.Split into three sections, Our Faith, Our Relationships and Ourselves, this is yet another poetry book I could read again and again. As a non-religious person, however, I didn't enjoy as many in Our Faith as I did in the other sections. In contrast I LOVED a lot of the poems from Our Relationships and particularly loved that the word 'mansplaining' (correctile dysfunction) was used 😍Dreamy cover though!"It doesn't matter how much money you have in the bank, you'll always be rich in blessings"

Beautiful Format
Gill's poems are visually appealing. They are food for thought on many topics in daily life. Gentle and true. Stream of consciousness in beautiful format. I especially enjoyed "Away" and "Compliments."The only complaint I have is for Amazon. The book arrived damaged on the bottom right cover. Part of the coating was ripped off and peeling.
