Can you machine wash and dry these slippers?

I have had these slippers for years. I scrub them with detergent and warm water, rinse briefly under running water, and then dry them thoroughly with a towel. Allow to air dry. My slippers last for a couple of years, until I wear through quite a bit of the sole.

Can you put them in a washing machine

This is what the Vionic website says: To clean, wipe away dirt and dust with a dry cotton cloth. Do not submerge in water or use solvents to clean products. Do not expose to extreme temperatures. Commercial dry cleaning or home wash/dry laundry machines are not recommended.

I wear a size 8.5 Medium and this shoe doesn't come in half sizes. Should I order an 8 or 9?

I wear 7.5 medium and ordered a 7 - it fits great, so I would suggest ordering the 8 rather than 9.

Have any men worn these?

Yes. They come in size 11 and 12. If the size works they are great for men too.
