Life changing
The version I have is titled "Cured: The Life-Changing Science of Spontaneous Healing" (the current title about the immune system seems a misnomer). Regardless, this exceptional book is full of scientific research, first-hand wisdom, and inspiring spontaneous healing stories from real people facing life-threatening disease. Why aren't all doctors asking these questions and offering their patients this wisdom?! Dr Jeffrey Rediger writes with the expertise of a doctor and compassion of a trusted friend. It's a must-read for anyone on the healing journey, as it is indeed life changing! Thank you Dr. Rediger for this treasure.

Recipes for Lemonades
"Cured" is about heroic patients who healed their medically incurable conditions, for example metastatic cancers, but also lupus and pulmonary fibrosis. Dealt lemons in childhood, with sour fruit in midlife, patients discovered ways to make lemonade their way. Psychiatrist Rediger, himself a minor lemonade maker, became aware of these individuals gradually, meeting all of them as he became aware of them, then continuing interviews over 15 years of study. He made progress by finding common pillars in their ways, diet, stress, inflammation and immune function, but saw no common recipe and felt he had not yet found something more essential. Persistence won. They had to forgive givers of childhood lemons.Hundreds, even thousands, of individuals have forgiven childhood lemons with counseling, but their stories didn't get published in medical journals since their sour midlife fruit wasn't medically interesting. With a busy patient schedule, Dr Rediger would not have time for non-medical reading. By contrast, I have been an avid reader in non-medical healing, my favorites by John L. Sandford with Paula Sandford or their sons, and biography of Rees Howells by Norman P. Grubb. Non-medical reading helped me see the key hero pillar, forgiving, which Dr Rediger found in his hero study. The heroes of "Cured" had non-medical help in healing. Not counselors, but family, friends, even doctors whose dialog let the heroes understand and forgive their lemon givers. Dr Rediger's medical reading explained how forgiving works: measurably spiking the immune system's "natural killer cells" which find and digest diseased cells. Biblical wisdom is always forgive, even "seventy times seven", an idiom for inconceivably large number, and medical wisdom has finally caught up after 2000 years. For that knowledge alone, I would have found "Cured" worth reading, but adding its context of hero stories, the book is a landmark in understanding healing.Rediger's "Cured" heroes had strong wills toward better life, but with counseling, our non-heroic wills can grow stronger. Medically incurable conditions challenged the heroes, but forgiving our childhood lemons can proceed without medical challenge. Rediger’s encouraging message after reading "Cured": if we see lemon fruit in our lives, we can get help finding sources, we can forgive them, we can connect with supporting family and friends, we can borrow from hero ways that work for us, and we can make our own lemonades.

Why do the cells stop obeying the order to commit suicide?
The theoretical physicist Paul Davies (The Demon in the Machine, 2019) tries to figure out why do the cells in a multicellular organism (about 30 trillion cells in our bodies) start behaving like single cells? Single cells are selfish, which leads to cancer when practiced in our bodies. The author should have emphasized more this key aspect, which is not understood at all. Just like we don't know why life. One has to be a true believer it's an accident. Medicine uses engineering approach, let's not ask why, rather search almost haphazardly if this or that will cure.

Cured Offers a New Way Forward to True Vitality
Cured brings a large and important message filled with inspiration and hope for healing at a time when the enormity of the changes upon us with our health and our healthcare system have lifted our heads and rendered us ready to hear a new way forward. This is that way. Dr. Rediger turns the volume down on all the noise and confusion with how to care for our health today by taking the spotlight off the specific diseases that are ailing us and moving it away from our quest to find the right doctor, healer or practitioner to fix our illnesses. Instead he conducts his research and shines the light deep within the newly and miraculously healthy among us for clues to their renewal and offers us a new way forward to true vitality.

A rare gem
Rediger is not only a great scientist, but he is also a great listener and a great writer. My only qualm with this book is that is seems somewhat mis-titled. Perhaps "Heal your identity" is a bit much for most people to take, so it seems he settled for the immune system. But it's really about identity, and why it matters.Rediger not only effectively tells several stories of "spontaneous remission", interweaving them to illustrate his primary thesis, but he incorporates his own story, as well, so that you can see it all from his point of view. So it is not just a self-help book. It's also a memoir. And that makes a huge difference. So yes, just read it. Read it if you or someone you know is facing a life-threatening disease. Read it if your or someone you know has any kind of acute or chronic condition. These lessons he is passing on apply to everyone, not just those who are suffering from some horrible affliction.

optimism
In a time where chemo is some kind of sacred treatment it is inspiring to learn of people saying NO! Not from fear but from an inner empowerment and requirement to move forward in tune with their own sense of autonomy. Thank you.
