Q: Does this truly create a very fine mist, like an atomizer should (as opposed to a spray)?

I'm not sure what the distinction between mist and spray may be. It is finer than what one would expect from a spray can, but there are some larger 'droplets' within the spray. I use devices such as this for artwork - shading - rather than airbrush. I spray india ink or Dr. Martin's dyes with it and find it better than spray bottles sold in the garden or kitchenware shops. I use an ultrasonic cleaner to fully cleanse it between colorants. It is inexpensive, so try one and see if it suits you. I like it and have gone through several, they do wear out or quit working eventually.

Q: can you fill this with a oil based perfume or does it only work with alcohol based perfume?

The perfume I use has a high oil content but is still heavy on the alcohol. The atomizer is great and produces a very fine mist. I don't know if the oil would eventually clog it or not. I have been using mine for over a year and it still works well.

Q: Does the bulb sprayer detach and reattach for travel ?

As, I don't travel with it, I have never checked that. I think the bulb part is attached to the screw on lid.

Q: is the silver top made of metal or plastic?

When I purchased this product, it was metal. I found that this was a great solution being the bottle my perfume came in was defective.
