How many ounces does this dish hold? I'd like to use it as a sugar bowl.

Honestly, it's been a while since I have seen the actual dish. But i'd say probably 12-15oz. if not more. It would be great for a sugar bowl.

It would in my opinion. It is larger than a traditional sugar bowl, but I do not see why not. I purchased it for a candy dish and was very satisfied.

How tightly does the lid fit? Will it keep candies fresh?

It sits "square" on top. It keeps candy fresh. It doesnt do inside the bowl but the top fits exactly the bowl. It fits the same as any candy dish I have or have had. This one was bought for my mother who is 89 and she has no trouble lifting lid and replacing. She enjoys her candy and loves pretty candy dishes.
