The Moon Over the Mountain: Stories

What forms one's identity?
Not only is this a fascinating read from the perspective of a Japanese Sinophile, the stories are a richly woven tapestry each illustrating the formation of identity and the changes, both internally driven and externally driven, that can cause positive and negative changes. The placement of each story added to the sublime reading experience: I read it straight from beginning to end during which each consecutive short story built further on an unconscious understanding of the theme of identity; it was only the last story that made this unconscious perception, of the overarching theme, conscious. The translation was top-notch. Sometimes I read a translation, whether Chinese or Japanese, and, while enjoyable, the sentences have been changed a lot to match a Western palate. Not the case with this translation! While anyone who speaks English can pick this up and enjoy it (the typesetter in me is quite picky about sentence formation, so please trust me on this), the sentence formation and the language attempts and succeeds in remaining true to the original Japanese.

I liked the first stories but the longer ones are a bit harder to get through, overall very neat read

Unique and quirky
I'm a Japanophile who was fascinated by this Sinophile's take on Chinese literature; Globalism. His love for it is palpable.

China through Japanese eyes
Well translated and poetic stories of China, written by an early 20th Century Japanese writer.

Clásico de la literatura japonesa.
"Y a medida de que iba corriendo hacia la luz de la luna me di cuenta de que mis miembros no pertenecían a los de un ser humano, sino a los de una bestia...". Se trata de una compilación de historias escritas por un escritor clásico japonés. El libro contiene pies de páginas que ayudan a entender algunos conceptos utilizados. La prosa de pronto puede ser complicada, pero sin duda es un libro que vale la pena leer.
