It is like Typhon2222 said.
I have had these Phillips Passive speakers now for a long time.they worked wonderfully on the day i got them, and still do.when it comes to passive it is tough to get good sound, some bass, and some volume.now we all know that without power it isnt going to do more than the power it recieves, but this week it is the victrolla of speakers when it comes to unpowered :-)they aint small and they aint very portable, but the sound is good.every device i have is different, a few of the devices i have Trim back the power going to the headphone connection, even lower than the "line levels" might be. on those devices no passive speakers are loud enough to be useable.for other devices it is loud enough for personal viewing (the hearing part) as long as your not in a noisey location.worked for the archos 5it, worked for a headphone based FM radio, worked for 2 CE devices , worked for a MP3 player thing, worked with the nokia phone.did not work for 2 of the cheap CE devices that cut off the headphone sound. If your device cant really power up a set of headphones with overly loud sound, then it might be the kind that doesnt have enough output on the headphone port.

Outstanding Value
I was quickly impressed with the sound coming out of these little speakers. The stereo 'sound stage' is so accurate you swear the sound is coming out of your laptop's speakers in the center of the screen (but the sound is too good). The nice organic round design of them makes them attractive and stylish. You can tell the difference the tuned bass port makes, put your finger over the hole in the back and the bass goes down noticeably. Pretty good engineering. My one concern was that the volume was quite low, even with the volume all the way up. I searched Google for a while for a software solution, and the cheapest/easiest way to get huge sound out of them is to just download WinAMP. Since WinAMP has a preamp setting, you can make the speakers be quite a bit louder. The speakers are unpowered, so take that into account per your rocking-out needs. Since I can get the volume I want, these speakers represent an excellent value and sound for the money.

Pretty good for the price
For $9.99, these speakers sound pretty good. They're light, and do not use batteries. Since they're not powered, they're only as loud as the max volume on your audio device. They don't have much bass, but sound pretty clear overall. If you want something portable and much better sounding, but won't break the bank, grab the Virgin Boomtube speakers. They can be found as low as $29.95, but normally run about $49.95.

these speakers suck. period.
ok i ordered these speakers to use in a project and i seen the reviews saying that it was kinda quiet. that is the UNDERSTATMENT of the freakin century. these speakers are rated at 8 ohms at 2 X 1 watts... for anyone who doesnt understand what that means... it means they give off next to no sound at all. it seems like they put no thought into these speakers at all as far as sound quality and volume it say no batteries are required but for these type of portable speakers, they really would be necessary. overall i am not satisied at all and i would not recomend these i would get battery powered speakers or some sort of portable dock... dont get these because they are a waste of your money and i also forgot to mention that they are freakin HUGE!!!! they are like a softball or a grapefruit cut in half.

Worthless
I don't do normally do product reviews but I am so disappointed by this product I have to.I bought these to use with my laptop to play audio files in a language class. Unfortunately, the speakers on the laptop are louder. And the speakers on my EeePC 1000H are not the best. Thinking something was up I tried it on multiple products, including my main computer, MP3 player, stereo, and portable CD player with the same craptastic results. In fact, they are just barely louder than a crappy pair of 10 year old Sony headphones. As others have posted, please be warned, these speakers have horrible sound volume.Save your money or buy something else.

Something is missing(?)
Speakers don't pump up the volume, but what should I have expected. It plays rather clear, but one can tell that something is missing. I probably should have invested in a little better sound. Oh well. They are okay for the price.

So far, so great!
I've been using another set of passive speakers with my MP3 player for about two years now (not these same Philips speakers), and they aren't great, but I didn't have an expectation of them being great. (Got them on clearance at Wal-Mart.) But lately I've been desperate for more speakers, wanting to double the volume output I've been getting. So I found these, and they are fantastic! So much better than what I've been used to. I use them at night, to listen to my MP3 player as I'm trying to go to sleep, so I don't need a lot of volume, and these are just right. I don't have to always have the volume on max to hear clearly. I'm actually going to order another set so I can have really good surround sound, and retire my other "bad" set of speakers to the garage. And passive speakers are so nice, because they don't require power. Meaning you don't need batteries or need to charge them. They will always, always work, as long as the device you're using them with has power.I highly recommend these speakers.
