I have tried 2 different boxes and followed the directions explicitly. Both times they dry up prematurely. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, thank you for your question. My hunch is that you might not have harvested them once they were done growing.  It's important to remove all mushrooms from your kit when they are done growing because if left on the substrate they will dry out within a day’s time. You know your mushrooms are ready to harvest when:

1) They have stopped doubling in size daily
2) They have turned from a dark gray/blue to a light brown color
3) They have a distinct brown ring around the edge of their cap

Question 2

Do the mushrooms only grow once?

You can usually get a 2nd flush.... wants the first round of mushrooms his finished growing you soak the log in water wrap it up put it in the dark for a week and then they’ll start growing again ....

Can I use this box to grow cubensis if I have spores?

Accepted Answer

Hi there! If you want to grow your own mushroom variety, you wouldn't want to use our box. This substrate is inoculated with pearl oyster mushroom spores so that is what will grow. You are better off collecting your own substrate -- any cellulose rich material like coffee grounds, sawdust, etc -- and inoculating them with mushrooms of your choice. Our kit is a product designed just to grow organic pearl oyster mushrooms.

Hi! My box molded, it was placed in indirect sun and wasn’t overwater. Has anyone else had this happen? And how did you fix it?

I just had the same happen! Write to the company. Amazon won't replace but Back to Roots will make good. I found customer service email on their website. It's kind of stupid you can't find a way to contact the seller thru Amazon.
