what is the strip that binds the kane on the seat called it wraps around the top of the seam

It is using a thicker piece of cane. In kit.some seats don't have a binder. In top or bottom of chair .U have a grove. After caning wet binder and push into grove. If u cane chair without having a pre.caned piece. U don't need. Go on u tube and watch video from caning man. That helped me more than directions. The picture was in color than Blk and white on directions

what does the spline look like? I don't see anything in my kit that appears different than the roll of caning

The binder cane used to cover the holes in the seat is heavier and slightly wider than the cane used in creating the seat. Look carefully at your kit and locate the heavier and wider piece. Use this to bind your work.

Do you soak caning before using?

Soak three or four strands of cane before beginning your project. If the cane is not soaked it likely will break during the caning process. Keep a rag or small sponge handy to dampen the strands of cane during the weaving process. Always keep the cane damp while weaving. A candle can be used to wax the cane to help it move more easily as the weaving gets thicker.

How do I know it is the right size caning for my chair with15/64 inch holes?

The kits come in different sizes. You need to know both the size of the hole and how far apart the holes are. Measure center to center.
