I woud say its neither hard nor soft its firm and easy on your joints

Is it necessary to purchase the balance bar?

Many of the cellerciser's come with the balance bar. It is not necessary, but is helpful. After 4 months, I can do a lot without it, but still use it occasionally. Depends on your core and your balance.

Is this the 2014 model?

No, i've had mine a few years. Probably a 2010 model. Still going strong!
