Text is defective.
The examples in the text were written in LaTeX, but were never processed into human readable form, making the text unusable, it'd be as though every page you went to on the internet only showed the bare HTML. My suspicion is the publisher stole the open source text from Project Guttenberg and published that as a print book.DO NOT buy this version of the book!ISBN: 9781481933339By Renaissance ClassicsI've uploaded a couple of pictures from the text of the book. See for yourself.Amazon was very gracious though and processed an immediate refund when I explained the issue.I should have taken the time too "Look Inside" the book. The version I received was this:Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (January 7, 2013)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1481933337ISBN-13: 978-1481933339I am ordering instead the cheaper:Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform; 2 Reprint edition (January 28, 2011)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1456531980ISBN-13: 978-1456531980The *actual* book is great, just be wary of the printing you get. There is a horrible person out there self-publishing Project Guttenberg through create space. I've informed Amazon and hopefully they will ban this person.

this book is a simple read & a great tool for those of us who have to use calculus now & then, but not so much on a regular basis. I bought 3 copies for my friends & they find this book quite helpful .

I learned calculus from this book. It goes directly to how to use calculus rather than spend a lot of print on theory. Modern notation and modern examples have been added to the latest edition but the basic book has been continuously in print since 1910 so a lot of people have found this book helpful.

Missing text and symbols in formula examples, do not buy this book.
Text is missing symbols in formula examples, making it hard to follow. Do not buy this book. Would have returned it, but missed the return window.

Strong on theory. Was expecting more of a workbook approach. Good theory. Needs more problems and exercises. Quality of the binding is excellent.

Unless your algebra II is really up to par, even Pre-Calculus, plan to be uber frustrated
I’m trying to learn the basics principles of calculus. Honestly I found 3Blue1Brown YouTube Essence of Calculus online to be more helpful

Historical, funny, must have
Clearly a book that has become a historical treasure. If you can't get your hands on a very old copy, this edition is the best of the modern reprints (avoid the Kindle one at all costs). The text is large and the formulas and graphs are printed perfectly with modern typefaces and graphics. The book is large (almost A4 size), larger than I thought it would be.On the content I would agree with other reviewers that a modern day reader would probably not know what a farthing is, or even worse they would be confused by the billionth being a millionth of a millionth, but knowing that the book was originally written in 1910 adds to the value and of course prompts the reader to try and understand deeper the historical context. The importance of this book is in the fact that it's written by a person who knew how to explain calculus and made it easy, approachable and funny. I can only imagine the joy of schoolboys in 1910 reading this book versus whatever else was available at the time. Indeed, it took me best part of 50 years to discover a calculus book that I'd enjoy reading! The original work is in the public domain, and in fact I do have a scanned version of the second edition from 1914. But I bought this edition because I wanted a printed copy to have lying just in case my children would pick it up. My only criticism of this edition is that there seems to be a page missing from the original; before the prologue, there is a page with the following: "What one fool can do, another can. (Ancient Simian Proverb)". Which of course is the whole essence of this work. Oh, and my book seems to have 2 Sudoku puzzles at the end (?!?!?!), wait, what?Whatever the print though, this book is pure gold!

simplicity itself
what one fool can do, another can. This has got to be the best book in caculus ever written. Any fool can calculate. It's true!

DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION!!!!
I bought this book, this edition as I had seen a previous edition on a tutors desk. After reading the first few pages, I found it helpful, then after a few more, I noticed a few print errors and decided to stick with it.A few more pages on, I was baffled, a few more and I had given up, so I took it to show a tutor to help me understand it...He said it is utterly useless! As I had come to realise myself!Unspeakable amount of print errors, layout faults and I come to realise that original text was written in 1910, that was probably the best version. This is dreadful BEYOND WORDS!!!DO NOT PURCHASE THIS EDITION!C.W. Civil Engineering Student.I will be returning my edition as it is basically a waste of the effort to produce the paper and waste of ink. If I could give ZERO STARS I WOULD HAVE!

Pity that not all the steps are shown.
The rearranging of formula does not show every step but assumes that the reader knows the process. Why do you think I purchased the book - the clue is in the title!
