The Green Lantern Season Two 1

The Blueprint for the future of Green Lantern...
Starting off I’d like to say that the amount of people who’ve underrated this run is astounding. As is normally the case with Morrison’s recent runs, it will get heavy criticism as it’s coming out, then years later when we can look back at the entire thing we fully appreciate everything that he was doing.Well this time don’t wait years, trust me on this and get it now.Morrison strives to push the Green Lantern mythos to its creative limit and I think he does so in spades. For far too long has Green Lantern been content with carrying the same tone and setting that Johns established all those years ago. While Johns is amazing and his run is the tentpole version, this run shows just how creative Green Lantern can be.If you’re a fan of classic Pulp Sci-Fi then you should most definitely buy this book and go ahead and get the other 3 volumes as well. Think of “Outer Limits”/ “The Twilight Zone”/ “Star Trek”/“ The Incal”/ “DUNE” and those classic sci fi stories from the 50s - 80s.Is it wacky? Yes. Is wildly diverse? Of course. Is it cosmically surreal? Absolutely. But it’s a big universe, and Grant Morrison is writing. Why would you want it any other way?

Continuation of an Incredible Run!
Stay on for a fantastic fleshing out of what makes Hal Jordan shine as a character, new Green Lanterns, and actually interesting shake ups to the hero and the GL Corpse!!!The Blackstars had been my favorite Arc that Morrison had done with Green Lantern and to follow it through to such a degree here, was incredibly satisfying!!

The Train is Running Off the Rails
Grant Morrison’s comic writing career tends to follow a certain path. He takes over a series, starts off like gangbusters and over time loses his audience as his stories get more and more out there. It happened with Batman, it happened with Superman and it’s happening with Green Lantern. I really wanted to like this book because I felt that Morrison was doing some very interesting things when he took over the series, but Season Two is a huge drop in quality. The stories are all over the place and the dialogue is often bizarre and completely unnatural.I read through the book a second time and although it improved on a second reading, it was not enough for me to raise my score above three stars. Grant Morrison writes stories that require some effort on the part of the reader. Some of that is because his plots can be complex but part of it is because he’s not always the best at linking scenes together or explaining to the reader what’s going on. Morrison is a creative genius, but the devil is in the details with his writing. I’m ok with the extra effort of deciphering if the payoff is worth it, but the stories here just aren’t that amazing. I’ve seen it many times where a writer takes over a series with a ton of ideas and once those ideas are spent, they just start flailing. The lowest point for me was “The Cosmidor Conspiracy” when Hal Jordan and a woman named Eve start speaking with the most bizarre dialogue. During this story, GL’s ring says, “some kind of blanket transmission is affecting your speech centers – and decision-making –." So, does that explain why their dialogue is so bizarre? Well, for one thing, the dialogue isn’t that far off from Morrison at his worst. For another thing, this line from the ring doesn’t have anything to do with the plot. It’s almost as if the editor told Morrison that the dialogue was ridiculous, and he added that line as an explanation rather than do a rewrite. It’s been a long time since I gave such a negative review to Grant Morrison, and this one is far from my harshest, but I had hoped that Morrison had moved past some of his worst instincts as a writer. This is the kind of writing that has turned off many readers. It’s not terrible, but I suspect the reviews aren’t going to be nearly as generous as they were for the first couple volumes. I gave the first two volume five stars each but not this time. Morrison has one more volume coming in July, and hopefully we’ll see an improvement. I believe that will complete his run and he’s moving onto other projects outside of DC. Wonder Woman Earth One Volume 3 is coming in March, but I don’t see Morrison taking over any series so this may be just about it. I remain a fan of his and hopefully he’ll be doing more projects for DC in the future. One last thing, the type of paper used for the cover is glossy in contrast to the mat finish in the first two books and for consistency purposes I think this was a really bad decision.

Absolutely terrible
This was a chore to read, with no payoff. If it has any meaning or point, I don't know what it is. It certainly has nothing to do with what you would expect or want from a Green Lantern Hal Jordan story. I suppose if it wasn't Green Lantern there might be something interesting in it, but even so the plot went nowhere except that maybe there will be some kind of event or war coming up, the dialogue made no sense, Hal Jordan was depicted however briefly as a buffoon, and when The Flash shows up he just sputtered around in space and time to no apparent purpose. I found Morrison's Batman to be engaging and enjoyable even when or perhaps because it was challenging, but this was simply repelling, offputting and distasteful.Yuck.

Even Cooler Than I thought possible!
I honestly thought I was getting a great deal with my thought that it was only 6 issues not the 9+ that are actually in this phenomenal HC! No words for just how awesome this Tale is! Read it now!
