Fantastic Mini-PC and Excellent Customer and Technical Support - What's Not to Like...
Update 7/4/2021 TPM 2.0 - is a new requirement for Win11 when it's released this fall. Minisforums engineering released a new BIOS/EUFI update that enables TPM. I am running the developers Win11 release and no compatibility problems have surfaced at all. So this HM50 is Win11 ready... ........................original post............................ Plenty of reviews out there on bloggers sites and on YouTube that provide technical details and stress testing the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U CPU and the AMD GPU. It scores very well in all the tests and is certainly no laggard by any means. It is still used in new name-brand laptops today so it's not outdated at all and runs like a scared cat. I've done my own non-scientific torture tests that go well beyond what I expected from this mini. I have three 24" 1080P monitors connected and brought up 3 different 1080P streaming videos - one on each monitor - all running at the same time. I had Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube video's all running and then looked at the Task Manger Performance tab and this mini was not even breaking a sweat. CPU at 17%, Memory at 4.8GB/15.4 (31%), GPU at only 7%. While all those were running, I brought up Lightroom 6 and started editing a photo as well Photoshop and the GPU usage went to 10%, CPU to 20% and Memory 5.5/15.4GB (36%). I then opened a word document in Libre Office, started a couple of app's (email and newsgroups ) and could not see any difference in the numbers. Still way below what one would consider high usage for any resource. I also tested both Ethernet ports (1GB and 2.5GB) as well as the wireless systems and they all work. I have 300MB/300MB service and the WiFi worked at spec. Not a single glitch... Certainly way more stuff going on than I would ever have normally running but... I'm also evaluating it as a replacement media / signage controller for a clients business with multiple monitors. This mini is now my daily driver and It has replaced a workstation I have that has dual graphics cards, 32GB of memory and 9 hard drives - all which made it an excellent room heater. With all the fans and hard drives spinning - it made some noise as you can imagine. I seriously doubt I will never need more power or capabilities than what this HM50 provides. I have 3 USB (4TB, 8TB and 10TB) drives connected to it and they remain fast even when copying files to all 3 at the same time. I installed two 500GB internal SATA SSD's (Samsung 860 EVO and a Corsair) for dual booting between versions of Win10 & Win11 and for running a Linux VM - just for playing around with. Not a single problem with any of the applications or any hardware compatibility issues - none. I have been in the computer / communications fields my entire career having used, programmed, built and maintained many different type systems from world-class size to now - Mini PC's. In my opinion, the most important part of any system is not the just the hardware or the software, it is the Customer Service and Technical Support that the company provides and how they stand behind their products. Yep, I tested both of those before purchasing the HM50 and I can say they are some of the best I have ever dealt with in all my years in this industry. I can't speak to reliability but they provide a 1 year warranty with a 6 month extension when you register. So 18 months warranty in total - I don't know of another manufacturer that provides that length of warranty unless you purchase it via a separate contract. Unlike some other mini manufactures I recently had to deal with for 5 months, I received prompt, courteous and accurate responses to my questions from Minisforum Customer Support (Nora) and Joey in Technical Support. Response time was a matter of a couple of hours and not days or a week or two later as with the other manufacturer. When I was looking for a replacement pc, a mini made a lot of sense for me. Big savings in power consumption. I cannot hear the fan even when the system is under a stress load and it does not take up a lot of space on my desk. It far exceeds my expectations. I have a home lab with about 10 other systems (full size PC's, laptop's and tablets) that I still use as test beds and just messing around with as part of my computer hobby. Now I do all my photo editing, writing and media watching on this HM50 and not lacking for anything. Remember that there are chip shortages now - and will be for a year or more which has driven costs up and that support is also part of the cost of any product. In time, Windows or some other applications or piece of equipment attached to it is going to create a problem and you may need some tech support in the future. I know that both the before and after -sale support was a positive 5 star experience for me and I expect it to be the same down the road. Lot's of choices out there to look at and I did a lot of research to make sure this would fit my needs now and still have plenty of power and resources for the future. It came with 16GB of Kingston memory and Kinston 512GB NVMe SSD for storage and can be upgraded if needed. It's plenty powerful and it just works....

Fast little PC
I have been build PCs and server for the last 20 years and I really like this little machine. The Ryzen 7 8785H is a fast chip. Despite being a mobile chip it runs nearly as fast as it's desktop brethren zen4 series equivalents due to its smaller process and better efficiency. I don't game, I use it for purely productivity and it opens and runs my applications fast. In the last few years I have gone from a full desktop form factor, to a slimline and then this. At a fourth of the size, this is 3x faster than my previous slim line . Its small size frees up my desk space. I have fully loaded and stressed tested the unit and it handles the heat of the small enclosure just fine with no throttling. I can't comment on the longevity because it has only been a couple weeks but thus far I am very impressed and I recommend it.

Powerful just like a fast desktop
I am extremely pleased beyond expectations with this remarkable mini pc. The UM 890 performs as well as I'm used to with my DIY desktop with a 12700k and DDR4 RAM. Plus I get the advantage of so much freedom of space. The best part is the great support from Minisforum prior to receiving and during the setup of the unit. Great advice and guidance in a friendly personal manner. The unit itself has a neat magnetic cover to avoid having to screw and unscrew when adding or upgrading Ram or drives. They included the occulink adapter which I might use later on. Right now I'm getting perfect 4k 144 Hz display on and M32u 32" monitor better looking then the 1080 Ti I was used to. Thank you Minisforum for a great product and service. I look forward to more.

OCULINK Requires NVME/m.2 Slot
I know it says it in the description but it bears repeating... I didn't realize how much I would miss not having that 2nd m.2 slot if I wanted to use Oculink. I spent a lot of time looking at this and the similary speced one from GMKtec. There was only a $1 difference between the two at the time of purchasing but I opted for the Minisforum simply because the Oculink port was on the back and the GMKtec was on the front. In the end, aesthetics won out... had GMKtec put the Oculink on the back and didn't use the bright green button, I would have went that route... when I added the GMKtec oculink AD-GP1 to this, I had to give up my m.2 slot. Luckily I had a SSK nvme enclosure handy so I put my 2nd drive in it. Not a big fan of having all of these cables on my desk but it works. Performance wise, this thing is a champ for its size. It easily handles everything I do in Photoshop and Lightroom. We have used Premiere on lower end mini PCs but I haven't tried to do any video editing on this yet but if it works on a 5700u, I'm sure the 8945hs will be even better.... and with the AD-GP1, rendering should be faster than relying on the 780m. Honestly, it is amazing how much performance we can get now out of such a small form factor. The first thing I did was open it up which I must mention how AWESOME Minisfourm made this... the top snaps on magnetically so no need to try and remove the rubber feet... you just pop the top off and you are in. You need to remove the fan cable to get easier access and I wish they made that cable a bit longer because it is a bit more challenging reconnecting the cable than removing the cable. I ordered 2tb WD Black SN850 to replace the cheap looking one that came with it and I had an old 970 Evo that I had in the 2nd slot until I got the Oculink card. But seriously, being able to pop the magnetic top off to access the 4 phillips screws was a nice touch. There are 2 sticks of Crucial ram in it but I don't recall the speed. I will probably upgrade that two 64gb later. I wish the bios/uefi had an option for XMP... if it does, I didn't see it so I am hoping it is using the full speed of the ram, especially when I upgrade it later. I replaced my old desktop which was an AMD 3800X with a Radeon 5700XT and this thing out performs it at a fraction of the cost. I am pretty sure I paid more for the chip/motherboard than I did for this mini PC and it is easily 10 times smaller. Had Minisforum opted to have the Oculink separate from the secondary m.2 and a tad longer fan cable, this would be 5 stars... losing the m.2 slot was kinda painful and trying to reattach the fan cable is a tad frustrating given how short it is. Other than that, the price is hard to beat and the performance is phenominal for its miniscule size.

Wifi not supported on Linux. I knew that when buying, but a better wifi card would... be better. Works great for gitlab hosting, no noise.

Small form factor, super fast, and runs cool. The Ryzen 7 8745H is an incredible CPU. Good for light gaming.

I had an issue with my Minisforum Elitemini UM890 Pro a few months after purchase. Windows 11 would no longer boot, and the SSD was not being detected. Minisforum's support team, and in particular Jessie, handled the situation with outstanding professionalism and responsiveness. They guided me step-by-step through troubleshooting, promptly provided a new OS key, and even arranged for a full reimbursement for a replacement SSD I purchased locally to minimize downtime. Communication was always fast, clear, and courteous, and it was evident they were committed to making sure I was satisfied. As an IT professional, I deal with many hardware vendors, and I can honestly say this was some of the best customer service I have experienced. Minisforum did everything possible to rectify the issue, and I will not hesitate to order from them again in the future. Highly recommended!

Beware that this comes with a MediaTek MT7902 wifi/bluetooth combo chip. If you plan to run Linux/Bazzite/SteamOS on this mini-pc, your wifi and bluetooth simply will not work as there is very poor driver support for this chip. Be prepared to buy another chip and change out the MediaTek. This PC also comes with a single 16gb DIMM which seriously hampers the gaming experience. Be prepared to buy another RAM chip in order to run in dual-channel mode and take advantage of the full performance of this PC. BIOS is very locked down with no option to adjust the frequency or RAM timings, this is a big problem on a device running an APU that needs to take advantage of the fastest possible memory configuration. LED on the front is ridiculously bright and extremely annoying. Built in 1tb NVME SSD is working great and I was able to add another 512gb SSD to the open slot and then put them into one big partition.
