As the wick outlet for this is 5/8 inches wide, a 1/2 inch wick should fit just fine. Note that your wick may burn slightly faster than a 5/8 wick due to increased exposure to air, and your light output on the lantern is going to be reduced slightly. But it should still work.

Q: Is this really safe to cook/eat on?

Yes it’s safe. But cooking a meal would be difficult. It’s more of a food heater than a cooker. Cook set that comes with it is crap. It will boil a cup of water if you cover the pot. It will cook an egg. Remember that you can’t turn the wick up too far or soot will form. But I do use mine with an aftermarket cup. Usually I’ll cook some sausage chunks and then add an egg or two and cover. Make sure you have plenty of time as it does take awhile.

Q: Can this cooking adaptor be used on a Dietz #80?

I am not familiar with the Dietz #80 but I would bet you can't use the cooking adaptor from a 2000 with it. With the #2000 you turn the top about an eighth of a turn and it comes off and you put the cooking adaptor on in place of the top. Unless a lantern is made to do that, the cooking adaptor wouldn't work. I would find a hardware store that sells the 80 and ask but I'm pretty sure the answer to your question is no.
