Can you sit this on the book directly or do you have to hold it some distance away?

Hello, these have to be held at least an inch away from the page in order to start magnifying text.  As you pull the lens further away, the magnification will gradually increase.  Thank You, Opticlens Inc.

Question 2

Is this capable of focusing the sun to a point for starting fires?

Accepted Answer

Yes it is. I purchased this item for use in this way (I have it in my emergency bag as a way to start a fire to cook). You can easily use the sun (even on a slightly overcast day) to ignite paper quickly. Keep in mind, items with a higher ignition temperature may take longer to heat up to the point where it will ignite and larger items would also take a longer time. WARNING: The concentration of the sun's rays as you do this create intensely bright light that is NOT safe to look at during this process. This creates a challenge of keeping the lens in focus, centered on the item you are trying to ignite without looking at it.  Use at your own risk and leave the lens in a place where it can focus the sun's rays on a nearby object which could pose a risk to starting a fire unintentionally.

Is this strong enough to drill a screw through it without cracking

Accepted Answer

Yes, we just tested this and there were no problems driving a screw through the plastic.  We also hammered a nail through one.  There was no splitting or cracking of the surrounding plastic.  You can also use scissors or a box cutter to trim these to any size you need.

Do you lay the magnifying on the page when reading a book or must you hold the magnyfier up from the page?

Hello. In order to magnify, the lens needs to be elevated at least an inch above the text or object you are viewing as mentioned in the description.  If you lay the lens flat on the page, it will be clear but have no magnification effect.  The magnification will gradually increase as you move the lens further from the page until it reaches it's maximum magnification at about 10 inches.
