Not read this yet but looking forward to it.
I read the first book in the quartet, which strangely enough is 5 book rather than 4. He is not the easiest of writers to read but once you get into his style, his knowledge of India is fascinating. In "Jewel in the Crown" he reveals the story, bit by bit, though the eyes of one of the persons involved, then another, then another, which is an interesting way to move the main story along. I haven't read this one yet but as it is the second one I have high hopes as I really liked "Jewel in the Crown".

Paul Scott at his best
wonderful prose, written with skill. It kept me glued for hours. I always read a new book for the first time quickly, and then reread taking it very slowly. I have read all his books and he never fails to entrance me. Brings the Raj to life with its variety of wonderful characters. I just love all four books, and recommend them to anyone
