Rinko Kawauchi: Illuminance: The Tenth Anniversary Edition
D**E
Two pages at a time
I love this book. First I was disappointed over the lack of page numbers, titles, and references. But as I paged through it I could see how many of the photos mystify. I saw floods of light. Some photographers avoid such flooding, but Kawauchi occasionally bathes in it. Her choice in juxtapositions of facing pages play a role in the two-pages-at-a-time experience and it certainly enhances the experience. David Chandler’s essay in the back begins with the words, “There is something primal for us in the act of opening a book for the first time.” That is certainly how I felt from the cover into the first pages. A beautiful book.
