Can it Toast one (1) piece of bread at a time?

Absolutely!! The one reminder is that it toasts more on the side toward the center in the toaster, but we toast mostly English muffins and that is perfect. I have regular toast and use the 3 setting also. ALSO THE BIGGEST SELLING POINT is that this toaster DOES NOT TOSS YOUR TOASTED ITEMS ON THE FLOOR!!! Love this toaster.

Where is the electrical chord? On the display side or at the rear?

The electrical cord wraps around the inside bottom of the toaster and comes out on the rear. You can unwrap the amount of cord you need which prevents a lot of extra cord on the counter. By the way, I love this toaster!
