Source Material to Power Rangers
This will basically be the same review as the other Sentai sets I bought. Great quality for what it is, and the subtitles are in English. Always loved Power Rangers and always wanted to see the source material.

4 seasons Down and 36 seasons to go!
Chouriki Sentai Ohranger is a special and also infamous moment in Super Sentai. The series aired during the 20th anniversary of the franchise in 1995 and brought Gorenger and JAKQ back into "the family" so to speak after years of being ignored as the first ever entries to commemorate the anniversary of Gorenger which debuted in 1975. The plan the staff of the series wanted to execute was bringing back the majority of veteran writers and have the advances of special effects and storytelling bring a darker reimagined concept of the original superhero military task force with the theme being an alien invasion and the horrors of war. However, 1995 was an awful year for Japan as they suffered one of the worst earthquakes ever in years which killed thousands and suffered a terrorist attack by a cult which killed even more civilians on a subway from sarin gas poison.Naturally, citizens watching a TV show featuring buildings blowing up and alluding to terrorist plots by the alien Baranoia villains made the network executives nervous so the original idea was shoved aside after episode 10. This led to tonal whiplash which plagued the series for a bit,the ratings going up and down wildly. Despite this, toy sales were outstanding for the show and that allowed the franchise to keep going but also shaped the aspect that toys and merchandise would be the dominant factor in determining whether a series was a success or a failure as shows would get more toyetic. For the future of our opportunity to own the series legally and getting one step closer to Gokaiger, I highly recommend the purchase of these DVDs. If the chronological order continues we are heading into the best entries of late 20th century Super Sentai such as Megaranger and Timeranger!

A flawed series, an impressive release.
Poor Ohranger. Few series in the Super Sentai franchise have ever gotten as much undeserved flack as it has. It's often been proclaimed (erroneously) as the show that "nearly killed off Sentai" for many decades by Western fans going off of old internet rumors, and many folks write it off without having watched it. That being said, the show actually IS quite a mixed bag, but one that has quite a lot going for it.Choriki Sentai Ohranger is a show that sets out to be something different: A dramatic, serious story of man vs machine that celebrated the Super Sentai Series's 20th anniversary by bringing in every head writer to date on board. Unfortunately, real life terrorism led to decisions to axe much of the drama and replace it with zany comedy, which does hurt the show. There's a constant zig-zag between serious episodes and slapstick episodes which give sit an identity crisis. On top of that, the sudden introduction of new characters and weapons to accommodate booming toy sales for the series leads to some very sloppy writing in the second half which can be extremely frustrating, and the characters as a whole are relatively static in their personalities and given very little backstory. So after all this, why would I say it's still a good show? Because it has some of the highest highs you'll find in Sentai in some ways. The action is dazzling, with some of the most impressive choreography and stuntwork the franchise has ever seen, making every fight a real treat for viewers. Seiji Yokoyama's symphonic score and Kentaro Hayami's vocals provide a rich and incredibly memorable soundtrack, lending a bombastic air to the show that still stands out as my favorite soundtrack in the franchise. And when the writing is good, it's VERY good. The first eight episodes alone are some I could watch over and over. "Invasion!! 1999" is easily one of my favorite Sentai premiere episodes with its tense action, tense mood and non-stop thrills. This DVD set really gives you the best possible viewing experience out there right now for the show, too. Using the same masters as the R2 DVDs, the picture is crisp and vibrant and the sound (while unfortunately a bit muffled) is as good as it can get right now. The levels of grain aren't bad at all, and add an extra layer of depth to the picture that makes it feel as fresh now as it did back in 1995.The subtitles, however, are a bit of a controversial point. The translation is excellent...but it is almost word-for-word ripped from an existing fansub done prior to this DVD set. Some of these translations even end up tweaking things into more literal (and in one case less accurate) lines, and it's a very strange situation. That does not appear to be Shout's fault, however, but rather that of the team they hired to translate the show. While I am saddened by such plagiarism, the fansubbers themselves have shown no ill will towards Shout as well, and I will say that it's a case of biting the bullet here. One final gripe is that neither the theatrical movie (which, while honestly awful, DOES relate to an episode in this set) nor the direct-to-video film "Olé v.s. Kakuranger" are included on this set. This is due to them being separate licenses from Toei, but I can only hope we get them on our shores in the future.Overall, though, for those who have never experienced Ohranger before, I would highly recommend this set! It's by no means a perfect series, but if you stick through the rough spots there's plenty of gold buried within.

Well worth it for any PR fan out there!
Where to start? Having watched every localized Power Ranger series and this being my first original Sentai Ranger series I have seen in it's original order, it is surprising how different it is in tone to Zeo. Without Zordon and Alpha, Bulk and Skull, and having teenagers as leads as well as the issues that come with them, it has a more urgent sense of danger and far less overly dramatic personal drama in Ohranger. Not to mention that monster abilities are different from Zeo in many episodes, they are used far better overall, and are more dangerous in Ohranger. What really stands out about Ohranger is the volume of material that was cut out to make Zeo even though I have been well aware of how much gets cut in localization for many Power Ranger series. Having rewatched Zeo recently, it is surprising how little of some episodes were used and how much footage was recycled in Zeo. While Saban saved quite a bit of money back in the day using minimal Ohranger footage, it must of taken a significant amount of time to fill in the gaps.

Ole! Ohranger
Shout Factory has done it again and brought another great Super Sentai series to the U.S. Chouriki Sentai Ohranger is very special as it marks 20 years of Super Sentai, bringing back Goranger and J.A.K.Q. to the series.Ohranger tells the story of 5 UAOH officers in there battle against the machine empire Baranoia lead by Emperor Bacchus Wrath (aka: Mondo the Machine King to Power Rangers fans). To aid them they are infuse with a special energy called Chouriki (super energy) created from a lost civilization of Pangaea.Although the series is mostly serious, it also has a lot of funny moment as well, full of action, drama, and the important of teamwork in all 48 uncut episodes. Ohranger is great for both fans of Power Rangers and Super Sentai, and I hope Shout Factory will continue to bring more Super Sentai to us fans.

Fantastic Season
Deffo Ratings this 5 stars and might have had a bad DVD set sent to me first but the seller was Quick at replying back and sorting me out a new boxset. So thank you for that 😊About the DVD it self. One very moving and brilliantly written super sentai series. The first 8 episodes are dark before it was all change from episode 9 till late on when some dark storylines come back into it.Watched this season in just over 2 weeks and completed it today and think it has to be one of my favs from the super sentai series and fully understood the episodes with it's easy subtitles. Now I fully understand all the fight scenes that was imported into power rangers zeo which half of the was cut sort.Roll on for the next super sentai season to be released now!!

Like Power Rangers Zeo on drugs
For the uninitiated, this was the series that Saban recycled to create Power Rangers Zeo. Much like MMPR, a lot of the elements of this show ended up on the cutting room floor when it was repackaged for American audiences to the point that it makes Zeo absolutely bland by comparison. Particularly the first few episodes. Whereas Zyuranger is like MMPR having a fever dream, Ohranger is like Power Rangers Zeo on a near-lethal amount of speed. On top of that, this series can't seem to find its tone. Some episodes are incredibly dark, while others are absurdly lighthearted and childish. These tonal shifts happen at break-neck speed. This show is all over the map in a way that is so over the top that it is nothing but entertaining 100% of the time.

I bought this for my brother. He loved it other than the fact that the 6th disc was broken inside the case and not usable.
