Traditional Japanese Stencil Patterns (with DVD): 1600 Images of Ise Katagami from Mitsukoshi-Isetan Collection Tankobon Softcover – May 24, 2013

I ordered this hoping for some background on the stencils I've been collecting for years, but what this book is could best be described as a compendium of actual stencils from a broad collection spanning decades. Better for graphic artists seeking inspiration than antiques collectors perhaps, but useful and visually delightful for both.The first time I opened the book I thought the spine had been cracked (I ordered it new), but it was bound so that the book could be opened completely. The naked spine is a bit innovative, but very handy when you're looking at a design that covers two pages. The second half of the book shows thumbnail images of hundreds of katagami, each named in Japanese and English. As someone working in the field of Japanese textile research, I'm very pleased with this book and enjoy the rich photography and brief history texts distributed throughout the first half of the book. Well worth the investment.

フリー素材のCDROMがついており、利用範囲が拡大しました。伊勢型紙の特有な文様のパターンがよくわかります。背綴も工夫され見開きやすくなっています。

素晴らしい内容でしたが、突き彫りの柄が見たかったのに錐彫りばかりだったので星を一つ減らしました。
