Goblin, a cheerful little homebody, lives in a cosy, rat-infested dungeon, with his only friend, Skeleton. Every day, Goblin and Skeleton play with the treasure in their dungeon. But one day, a gang of "heroic" adventurers bursts in. These marauders trash the place, steal all the treasure, and make off with Skeleton―leaving Goblin all alone! It's up to Goblin to save the day. But first he's going to have to leave the dungeon and find out how the rest of the world feels about goblins. Review: So good! - Love this book! The illustration s are great, and the story is very entertaining and wholesome. Review: My kid loves this book - Just want to say thank you to the author of this book. My son is 3.5 years old and loves Halloween, so he connected with the skeleton and goblin characters immediately and found the themes portrayed in the book to be very interesting. It's also loaded with lots of small little visual details that kids love to pick up on multiple rounds of reading. I haven't written a review of a product in years, but I'm just really impressed but how good this book has been for us. Thanks author! I would love to see a sequel that explores the backstory of the skeleton!

Fun story from the perspective of a goblin in a dungeon that is plundered by adventurers. The adventurers took goblins very best friend so goblin goes out into the world to get him back. The art is beautiful and the story is well written.

You will never see “heroes” the same way again!
This story is funny and surprising and a huge hit with my kids. I gift it often as it has wide, non-gender-specific appeal. It has such a great message about the importance of seeing the world from multiple perspectives and not making assumptions about who the heroes are. Also, it can help younger kids not to be afraid of goblins, ghosts, or trolls, who so often crop up in family or kids’ stories as menacing figures.

Lovely book rich in word and picture.
This book is wonder-full! I get where people are coming from with the girl as prisoner thing... but the thing is Skeleton is also their prisoner and is a boy. So it's not a woman thing... it's a comical adventure story with typical themes of going on quests, friendship, battle for things that are important to you etc. But the bottom line is that what is important to the protagonist is saving his friend. Ben Hatke's illustrations are wonderful. He tends to draw female characters with exaggerated feminine attributes, but I don't think that takes away from his lovely stories and illustrations and further, I could also see many women seeing his depictions as flattering to the female shape. To each their own. We love this book and also Julia's house for Lost Creatures. Hatke's books are so rich in picture and word that we never tire of reading them and find new things to look at each time.

Love the author, love the book!
Love the author, not just this book. We love this book, though. It was my daughter's favorite for quite a while, and she still loves it, but is a little old for this to be her bedtime story. Highly recommended!

A favourite & beautiful bedtime book
A beautiful book, which we initially received as a gift & enjoyed it so much, that we bought a copy to gift to a dear friend. As someone who has played dungeons & dragons I can appreciate a different perspective of adventurers looting a dungeon. A great story to explore perspectives & friendship & acceptance.

FANSTASTIC story for all ages!
We've read this book nearly daily since we got it a week ago. We have Ben Hatke's Zita and Mighty Jack series so I knew we already liked his work, but I was still blown away by how good this picture book is. Hatke's illustrations add as much to the story as the words do. This is a wonderful story about a character who is usually the bad buy (a goblin), who sets off to do something brave for a friend. There's some fun twists in the story and a beautiful message about friendship and courage. I highly recommend Nobody Likes a Goblin and all Hatke's other books!

Terrible values. The hero wins by lying and violence. Encourages tribalism.
I bought this book for my nephews. I thought, based on the high reviews and the book summary, that it would teach good values. It does not! *SPOILERS FOLLOW* Basically the hero is a goblin, and while he does meet some friendly characters who are not goblins, all the humans don't like him just because he is a goblin and chases him away. Then he eventually meets some other goblins who like him just because he is also a goblin. He lies to them that he is the Goblin King. Then all the goblins chase the humans away. End of story. tldr: This story endorses lying, expecting that people who don't look like you will be unfriendly and that people who do look like you will be friendly, and that the only solution to violence is even more violence. I will not be giving this book to my nephews.

my son is a big fan
lovecall the Ben Hatke books. This is quite a simple storey suitable from maybe age 4yrs. My son is 7 and has read all of Ben Hatkes books his favourite is the Zita the Spacegirl series which are aimed at a slightly older child than the everyone loves a Goblin book. The illustrations as always are beautifully done and as parents we also really enjoy sharing Ben Hatke books with the kids.
