Great educational toy
Bought this for my grandson's fifth birthday. He loved it as soon as he unwrapped it and was able to use the controls quite easily with some help from his older brother who had used a programmable Beebot at school. He loved the spell book, particularly the program for making the dragon sing happy birthday. As a former teacher, I think this is great to teach children simple programming in a fun and imaginative way.

Screen free coding with a Dragon!
This coding Critters set arrives in a lovely bright full colour box that is very appealing to children & measures around 25.5cm x 23cm x 13cm.It would be easy to wrap & make a fabulous gift for a young STEM fan.Inside you get Blazer the Dragon who is about 15cm long, 10cm high & approx 8cm wide.He has wheels on his base & also the access for putting in batteries - you need a screwdriver to access the battery compartment which is next to the on/off switch. The wand is approx 13cm long & the base is about 5cm diameter. It also has an on/off switch, plus easy to press coloured buttons & can be stood on it's end.The battery compartment is accessed through the base of the wand & needs a screwdriver too (same size screws, both need a small Phillips head screwdriver)Blazer needs 3 x AAA batteries & the coding wand needs 2 x AAA batteries so you need 5 in total. He works best on a tabletop or a laminate floor & struggles on carpet. The wand says it works from up to 3ft away & will accept a maximum of 40 steps in a coding sequence. The 'magic spell book' looks nice but is just a paper printed leaflet stapled together & not a book with a cover as it looks in the images. It contains spells (aka simple code sequences) you can input to make Blazer do more than just go left/right/forward/back.Examples include making his horn light up & rumble, make him chase his tail, sing a dragon song & take a nap. There are a few others. He comes with some props to perform some of the 'spells' such as to guide him to 'fire' the catapult or 'chase' his ball (aka push the ball)The spell book is in the form of a story/adventure with each spell a step to complete as you go through the adventure.Once the adventure is over, there is a still plenty of play value in this set either in working out your own series of steps for Blazer to take or just playing with your dragon.I do feel it's a little overpriced but everything is solidly made (with the exception of the 'spell book') & designed to suit small hands. It also doesn't require using a tablet, parents phone, computer etc... which makes a refreshing change, The manufacturer states this will reinforceBasic coding & spatial concepts.Critical thinking.Sequential logic.Collaboration & teamwork.I'd agree with the first three, but the final one is only going to work if you don't play with this alone which some kids may well do.Depending on reading abilities, they may require a little parental help with the 'spell book', but once grasped this would suit independent play very well.

A nice idea, but not as good as it should have been
The media could not be loaded. I’m not as impressed by this beginner’s coding toy as I expected to be from the product description. The idea is very nice, the reality not quite as good. The toy consists of a plastic, wheeled dragon accompanied by a remote control ‘wand’ that provides basic instructions. The two main pieces are accompanied by a series of Medieval-themed props and instruction cards for setting up a route. The set comes with an instruction paper aimed at adults and a child-friendly ‘spell book’. The spell book is not bound properly as a book, it’s really just a leaflet – and likely to become damaged quite easily. May be worth scanning/photographing this so that pages can be printed off and laminated, or stored on a tablet/phone.The set requires five AAA batteries to run: three to go in Blazer himself, and two to go into the ‘magic wand’. The battery doors on these were fairly horrid to get off – with deep set screws (particularly on the wand) that are fiddly and require a small-sized Philips head screwdriver. In use, Blazer has two modes. A simple mode, where the left, right, up, and down buttons on the magic wand simply instruct Blazer to move a pre-set amount in the direction indicated, and a ‘spell mode’, where particular combinations of buttons will result in Blazer performing a set task, such as growling out a few bars of ‘Happy Birthday to you’. In simple mode, you enter a series of instructions by repeatedly pressing the direction arrows, and then press the central button on the wand to see Blazer act out the directions he has been given.Every single ‘coding’ instruction in the spell book is inaccurate. It’s a minor detail and easy to rectify, but the manufacturers have forgotten to add the final step to each code: you have to press the central button on the wand to action the code. Not one set of spell instructions remembers this. The toy is clever in that it teaches children to follow instructions, then plan and sequence their own instructions for Blazer to achieve a specifically desired outcome. But the accompanying props are not particularly well made. I’m not convinced this justifies its RRP.

Nice learning toy
I bought this for my great-nephew for Christmas and he loves it. I did have to return the original and reorder it because the remote didn't work on the first one but the second one had no issues according to his mom. He absolutely loves it and it's a great learning toy for him. Who would have thought a 5-year-old would be learning to code? It's awesome!I can't speak to the sturdiness or durability since he hasn't had it long but at least it's still working after a few months!
