Behind nearly every item in the modern male wardrobe is a "first of its kind"the definitive item, often designed for specialist use, on which all subsequent versions have been based. Icons of Men's Style examines, garment by garment, the most important and famous of these productstheir provenance and history, the stories of their design, the brand/company that started it all, and how the item shaped the way men dress today. Review: excellent read - I opened this book a few hours ago and haven't put it down since. It contains a rich history of men's fashion staples, from the deck shoe to the biker jacket. Every bit is informative-not just in a sartorial sense, but culturally how the clothing became what it is today. For example, the M-1951 jacket came in olive green and not the typical olive drab, since it was produced post-WW2 and the higher-ups believed that the surplus of olive-drab military color being worn by laborers was devalued. In the following decades, the jacket was worn by the Mod community who embraced the cheap, military surplus jacket to protect their sharp suits as they rode their scooters through the elements. Explaining the What and Why makes this book a successful compilation of men's fashion iconography. Review: Great book for both men and women - I fist noticed this book while shopping in the Men's Dept. at Nordstroms. I fell in love with the cover...that picture of Gregory Peck! So handsome! I did not need to look beyond the cover! The book is fascinating. I was intrigued not only because of the styles and clothing but the history behind the garments I bought it as a gift for my fiancé and his adult son. They both love clothes and both wear them well. It is read for men and women...actually for anyone that loves clothes! and history

I enjoyed this book
I enjoyed this book. It is more about the history of certain fashions but a good read just the same.

Cool Men's Style Book With Great Photos!
Great Men's style book. I actually bought the book because of the many amazing photos! Many great photos of classic film stars. The photos show great style. This book has many great style tips for men. The book has great information on the history of men's clothes. Items such as: The Bomber Jacket, The Trench Coat, The Pea Coat, Jeans and many more. Very interesting and enjoyable book.

Great book if you don't wear suits regularly
I found this book very informative and useful. I had maybe 1/2 to 2/3 of the pieces discussed in the book and the book naturally filled in the gaps of what else I might need (ie I had a leather bomber jacket, but not a cotton barracuta type jacket). I have found that after filling out the must have pieces, I feel like there is not much more I am needing unless something wears. I dress casually for work and for everything else, so this book may be of more help to people who don't wear suits regularly.

Interesting but not inspiring
I guess I should have read more reviews on this one. I bought it on a whim because Gregory Peck was on the cover and I expected a bunch of cool characters with photos and commentary on what made them style icons. Instead it's a series of fairly obvious and not so fascinating chapters on e.g. the white t-shirt; Ray Bans; the Trench Coat; the Blazer, etc. Ok if you are studying this stuff in school but not really much more. Some nice photos though

Truly enjoyable
I've read this twice, it's a nice fun read. It lists all the iconic men's styles, such as the peacoat. More importantly, it shows the history of the item, how it was engineered to serve one need but became iconic. For example, the trench coat actually comes from WWI trench warfare.

A must-have for gentlemen!
Don't judge a book by its cover. This proverb did always work pretty good for me. Especially with "Icons Of Men's Style" by Josh Sims. I've ever thought, it was a book about people, like actors, fashion idols, whatsoever. But I was wrong. This great book provides detailed information about the heritage of companies and brands and the background of their success. This books features 7 chapters: 1. Outerwear: The Blouson/The Waxed Jacket/The Overcoat/The Denim Jacket/The Duffle Coat/The Fishtail Parka/The Flight Jacket/The Mac/The Biker Jacket/The Pea Coat/The Bomer Jacket/The Field Jacket/The Trench Coat. 2. Trousers: Khakis/Jeans/Cargo Pants/Bermuda Shorts. 3. Shoes: The Sandal/The Desert Boot/The Basketball Shoe/The Work Shoe/The Work Boot/The Loafer/The Driving Shoe/The Brogue/The Deck Shoe. 4. Underwear: Y-Fronts/The T-Shirt/Boxer Shorts. 5. Tailoring: The Bespoke Suit/The Dinner Suit/The Sack Suit/The Blazer/The Ready-To-Wear Suit/The Tweed Jacket. 6. Shirts & Sweaters: The Shirt/The Sweatshirt/The Button-Down Shirt/The Guernsey Sweater/The Hawaiian Shirt/The Polo Shirt/The Lumberjack Shirt/The Breton Top/The Cardigan. 7. Accessories: The Luxury Lighter/The Panama Hat/The Fountain Pen/Aviator Sunglasses/The Diving Watch/The All-Weather Lighter/The Moon Watch/The Necktie. Comprehensive information about everything you need to know about all kinds of favorite brands and insights in fashion. If you're interested in fashion, you have to own this excellent book. Great job, Josh!

Great quality book
This was a Xmas present for my son. This was a used book. I was worried about the quality when I ordered it. I had no need - it was in perfect condition. Great quality, well look after. The book was very informative and interesting going back over the years in mens clothes. Son was extremely pleased with the book so great result. Fast delivery would definitely order again from them.

Wonderful book to browse through
Lots of info on the origins and development of everyday items like jeans, bomber jackets, tee shirts, Rolex watches and many many more. It's about stuff all around us, that for one reason or another has stayed the distance. Nicely written and with great photos, including icons Marlon Brando, James Dean, and my personal faves, Paul Newman and Gregory Peck wearing the various kit. Did you know that desert boots were originally worn by traders in Egyptian markets? Whilst a soldier in Burma, Nathan Clark of Clark's Shoes saw soldiers who'd served in Egypt wearing them. On returning home he used the basic design to develop what is now known as the desert boot. If this sort of information appeals to you, you'll love this book. It's a great pick up and read bits here and there sort of book, though I seemed to get through quite a lot in one go, once I'd got it back from my husband! Just love it. Good fun, fascinating and easy to read.
