Powered up my MSI gaming laptop after it was in storage for seven years (2017-24). Who would have guessed, the CMOS battery (in addition to other problems) was completely dead and causing the boot problems. Replacement was a couple screws on the bottom of the laptop, unstick and unplug the original, and plug it the new battery. Only two differences between OEM and the replacement. The new battery did not include a sticky pad to secure the battery and the wire leads to the two pin connector were about a half inch longer than the OEM. Computer now keeps the date and time, and I can get my secure hard drive to be recognized. Now I just get to troubleshoot the main battery.

I measured the battery upon arrival and it was holding a strong charge of 3.27V. I plugged it into the circuit and cycled the main power...no more lost memory problems. I wanted to note that this is a 1.25mm female plug since I didn't see that mentioned in the sales specs above. We needed a way to get a PLC's battery off the internal board and into an external location for ease of change in the future. We soldered a 1.25mm male harness to the circuit board where the original dead battery was and routed it to the outside of the enclosure for this battery to plug into. In 5 years, we will be able to change this battery easier.
