Will it work in auto mode without kicking into the 1500w setting? can i force it to run automatically staying at 900 watts?

In Eco Mode it will use both the 1500 and 900 watt settings. Once your room reaches the set temperature, lets say 75 degrees, it will run at the lower wattage until it gets below that temperature. Once it gets below your set temperature, it will run at the higer wattage to get it back to your set temperature. If your house is insulated well and the tempetature doesn't drop fast it will stay at the lower wattage, because it takes less to keep it there.

Has anyone replaced their traditional heat source with these? I have a small 500 sq ft house. Would this get me thru a New England winter?

Why is the power cord in the front? Not only ugly but seems terribly unsafe with heat?!

Not unsafe at all.  For a Radiator heater, its very, very well made.  Works EXCELLENT.  Not a concern of mine whether the cord exits which side.  Concern is how heavy and safe the cord is...and this one is very safe.

Can I leave this on while I'm gone for the day?

This model has over-heat protection feature , you can leave it on when you are not home, but we don't recommend you use it in this way. 
You can set the timer if you go out
