Overall the chess set is okay, I was hoping for something A little more cohesive and sturdy. One of the pawns is super slanted like it’s leaning and some of the pieces are a little oval shaped as opposed to round and it can be a bit distracting during play/analysis that I end up switching the pawn out when I have the chance. Overall the set is okay, the board I got has already chipped and scratched a little but that’s more because I just throw it in my backpack, which is a little bit of a let down. The only real issue I have is that some pieces are misshaped and one queen is slightly discolored. The pieces are also a little smaller than I expected. So overall it’s not bad, but not exactly what I was looking for. If you have the budget I’d recommend maybe going with something a little nicer, but it’s a fun on the go set or one that’s more ideal for kids because of the smaller pieces. With that said I do think the set will last for a years structurally but may get scratched up a bit on the way.

All my reviews are based on the price I paid for the product and if it met or exceeded my expectations at that price. For this set, I paid $24.99. It's a nice beginner set that my son and I enjoy playing on. I'm teaching him how to play and he wanted a set of his own so I decided to pick this up. I like that it's all wood. The pieces and board are all wood. The pieces are the "classic" style pieces, which my son and I both like since he's learning the game. I also like that it came w and extra queen for each side. I don't expect that we will lose a piece, but my son was quick to say that he can get 2 queens if he gets his pawn to the other side of the board. The inside of the board (when folded) stores all the pieces nicely in a felt lined holder. The elastic straps that hold the pieces in are firm but my guess is that over time, they'll start to lose some of their elasticity. Only time will tell for that though. There are a couple of issues that I will point out. The pieces aren't perfect. One I received has an extra little piece of wood sticking out that wasn't stained (see picture). Another has a little deformation, which I don't actually mind because it gives the set a little more character. My guess is that you shouldn't expect "perfect" pieces when you get this set. The thing that worries me the most is the thin feeling of the board. I feel that if you put a little too much pressure on it, it will split the board. As long as you take a little caution, it'll be fine. Also, you need to remove all the pieces from the holders before laying the board flat (including the extra queens) otherwise the pieces won't allow the board to sit flat on a table. Lastly, the felt on the bottom of the pieces is extremely thin. It's there, but in some cases, it is so thin, it doesn't feel like there's anything. Overall, I think it's a nice set, for the price. Don't expect perfection, but you can expect a nice, non-plastic, beginner set to use before getting a more "adult" set if you find you like the game. For the price this product is remarkably well put together. We were pleasantly surprised. It all fits together in a foldable board/holder so no pieces will be lost. Highly recommend if you’re looking for an inexpensive travel or daily use board you’ve found it.

I purchased this chess set for one of my middle school students who is in the after school chess club. He loves chess and recently beat his chess teacher for the first time. This wood set is so well made and I love that the chess board holds all the pieces inside and it can be carried like a brief case. It was a reasonable price for such a beautiful wooden chess set. I highly recommend this set.

At time of purchase I chose the larger set. I din't realize it was "chess only". My error. Missed the fine print. I'll keep watch for a cheap checker's set to get the game pieces.
