I purchased these to use in my oven to create steam when open baking sourdough bread and they work perfectly. They are sized just right to fit in a cast iron pan and generate great steam when heated and hot water is poured over them. They are a bit dusty when you open the packaging, so be careful. Otherwise they are great for my purposes.

Needed these to put that the bottom of my oven for when I bake bread. Worked perfectly!

Too many tiny little pieces.

I use these in a tray on my oven when baking bread. They act as a "heat sink," so to speak, to regulate the temperature more steadily, and by dumping a couple of cups of ice on them when first putting the bread into the oven, it creates steam for longer than just spraying mist into the oven, thus allowing the bread to have a longer rise before setting.

The size of the lava rocks inconsistent with the size. Most are really small that they fall between the grill which render them render useless. Some are just too big .

About a fifth of the rocks in the bag were not lava rocks. They were just plain rocks. The plain rocks weigh quite a bit more than the lava rocks, so I got nowhere near 7lbs of lava rock.
