Funny!!!
Hysterical!!! The Amazon prime video is adorable too! We quote this book all the time and my five-year-old son says the hens remind him of his sisters - or I should clarify the smart hen reminds him of both his sisters lol. Maybe I am biased because we have kept hens and love them. But it is an adorable book and leaves us laughing outloud- especially the amazon video enacting it! I love that this does not talk down to children-It is a well written story that appeals to my children five through 13 as well as myself! In response to the negative review, I would say that Every child is different and I remember when my girls were younger I was very sensitive to drama and anything scary. But to clarify, the book itself it’s not inherently frightening as some books are.(spooky drawings or fierce words). I think the main objectionable thing for a sensitive child would just be the very concept of a predator capturing a chicken and of course the idea that it alludes to which is that predators exist. I could picture this being a bit anxiety provoking for some children, but in my opinion does not reduce the rating of this book. If anything, perhaps the book is geared toward an older set as was alluded to in the negative review. Overall there is a general feel of a cautionary tale with an underlying suggestion not to believe any “Mr. Johnson” when he offers you a treat and asked you to go for a ride in his hot air balloon!

Funny, Charming
This is a funny story yet it's smart. You learn the importance of reading with this book--read or else you'll make mistakes like falling for a fox's con.

What a great push for reading!
An excellent book for teaching the importance of reading and gaining an awareness of simlarities in plot. Poor Winnie learns that she may the next 'stuffed chicken for dinner' as a result of not wanting to read a famous tale. The story takes the reader on a rollercoaster of 'what-ifs' and creates wonderful moments for predicting text. I will be using this story for numerous lessons in my classroom, from developing a sense of story to partner predictions. Excellent illustrations, too!
