I have an 8 year old girl. Is the button easily pushed down?

The umbrella is too heavy for a child. The automatic button allows to close the umbrella but the stalk of the umbrella remaining to pull down(to reduce) requires a lot of strength in arms even for me adult.

How big is the canopy when opened?

Is the umbrella supposed to lock in place when open? Mine does not and I'm wondering if it is missing part of the mechanism
